When I was down there they was lots of talk about this guy....who had defected to the Dominican I think. He is suppose to have a goooooood bat. It was intersting listning to some of the Cubans ands how they are "split" regarding BB players who end up in the US. Some say ya lets go it all about getting ahead and the the big $$$$$$$.....then the next guy says its all about pride and love for Cuba and should not go to the the US....no matter how much $$$$. Comments: Tie to start my campaign against the way pitchers are rewarded wins. To me it doesn't make any sense that a Sp must go 5 innings or else the reliever who blows the lead but is still in the game when the winning team gets the lead back gets the win. How does that make any sense?? Another example of this stupidity is when a closer blows the lead but his team scores the next inning and he gets the win. Shouldn't one of the pitchers who got the game to the 9th get the win?? How about awarding the win to whoever pitched the best for the winning team?? I know this can lead to controversy if it's subjective. So how about this for a solution? Whoever retires the most batters gets the win, plain and simple. That way a guy doesn't get the win because he came into a tie game and retires one guy to end an inning.
I know only 3 people will read this, but when starting a revolution, it's good to start small.

Comments: Big bucks for Vernon Wells. I like the guy and it's definately good that he's staying, but the 6th highest contract in history doesn't seem like something Toronto can afford.
It's an interesting deal in that it's heavily backloaded. He's only getting a half million this year so that the Jays have the cash to try to aquire another starting pitcher. Unfortunately that's not such an easy task. You just can't go to the supermarket and pick up a decent pitcher, and I don't think offering trade bait like Alex Rios is going to get you much of a pitcher either. Having the cash and actually getting someone of value are two different things.
So the Jays have a couple of years to try and buy a contender before the big bucks for Wells kicks in. Perhaps it's worth a shot, but it's interesting that Gord Ash lost his job mainly because he gave Delgado a big contract. The team couldn't compete carrying Delgado's contract, and it won't be long until the Jays are burdened by similar bucks for Wells. These are the woes of a small market trying to compete with the big spenders.

They were leaving for Venezeula for some exhibition games then off to Taiwan for some tournament. I later found out he was one of Cubas' best 2nd baseman in his day...a real gentleman. He asked lots of questions about Canada. He wondered how Canada was developing so many good players....he thought all we played was hockey. I explained that its not cold and snow all year round and that the Vancouver area is not any diferent than Seattle. He said they were planning to come to Canada next year for exhibition games against Can National team. So hope that happens. He thanked me for helping out with some gloves and balls that I took down to a kids team.

Comments: I thought the Red Sox were actually going to be really smart and not offer Matsuzaka (or whatever) a contract for more than 5 mill. Since he really couldn't sign anywhere else, they either would have had a great deal for a pitcher or would have succeeded in blocking anyone from signing him. It could have blown up this whole ridiculous posting thing which allows only the rich teams to get Japanese players in their prime. But no, they instead paid heavily for a guy who's never thrown a pitch in the US.

Comments: It is wild to think about just how much money these guys are making. I consider myself to be doing fairly well, acre of land in the far Chicago suburbs, 5 bedroom 3,200 square foot house, yada yada yada. But I'm currently looking for a new job and it's pretty damn weird to consider I'm looking to land something that will pay me around .5% of what Soriano will make each of the next 8 years. But then again my wife's a teacher who makes less than 1/2 of what I do. As I tell her it's not how important your job is to society it's how much money other people can make from having you around. What's amazing to me is baseball interest has to be at an all time low, at least with the younguns, the postseason ratings were awful, and yet apparently there's still a boatload of money out there for them. I never blame anyone for getting all the money they can. I just can't imagine what it must be like for someone like Soriano to grow up dirt poor and now have more money than entire cities in his home country. I wonder how many pesos that is anyway? Any truth to the rumor that 5 detasslers have died so far trying to figure out how much Canadian that is for the Wizard?? My guess is 10 gazillion.
BTW, I also saw that he's from the same town as Sosa, to me that's a baaaad omen for the Cubs.
Congrats to Morneau. As someone who watched him kill my team and win some games almost single-handedly I'm glad the voters got it right this time.
As for the Canadians being superior, well I'll just let that one go. Eh?

I winced a little when the Jays signed the Big Hurt for $19M for 2 years, but then the Cubs sign Soriano for $136M for 8 years. WOW! After we've been following hockey's modest economic system it sure is a shock to return to baseball's bizarro world of free agency. The money that get's thrown around in baseball is ridiculous.

Comments: The Red Sox are high. 51 million just to negotiate with a player. Did they ever stop to think what else that 51 million plus, say another 40 million for his contract could have reaped for them? How about Barry Zito and Ted Lilly for starters? Then you probably still could afford Soriano and Ray Durham. Seems to me they'd be better off with those 4 guys thana pitcher that, for all the accolades, nobody really knows how he'll do in the AL.
The Cubs still don't get it. They overspend to retain Ramirez because they gave him an opt out clause in his contract. Then the new contract has a no trade clause for 3 years and the same opt-out clause, gee think he'll take that opt out?? Then they sign career utility guy Mark Derosa after he had a career year to be their everyday 2nd baseman. You heard it here first, Derosa will hit 30 points lower in the NL and won't hit 20 homers ever again. Yeah that was better than saving all your money for 3-4 SPs that you really need. Of course these moves are action, and any action in the off season assures them of 3 million fans next year.

Comments: While the Wizard does not plan on watching much of tonight's Cardinals/Mets game because of the fact that the world champion Chicago Bears are playing Monday (or "Mundee" as Frank Gifford used to say) Night Football I just thought I'd like to predict that the Mets will win tonight. The reason for this fearless prediction is that Tom Glavine is pitching for the Mets. Now, normally the Wizard would not be swayed simply by a pitching matchup, as we see time and time again how unpredictable sports can be.
I will make an exception with Glavine however. The reason being is that umpires still must believe he's the Glavine from the mid-ninties Braves because he appears to be the only pitcher in baseball who does not actually have to throw a strike in order for it to be called a strike. The first game he pitched I lost count of the balls that missed the corner that were called strikes. It didn't matter if the were high or low, if it was 6 inches off the plate it was a strike. The Mets catcher doesn't even have to do that bothersome, time consuming, "framing the pitch" thingy that other catchers have to do in order to steal a strike. The Mets catcher can reach out and pull it back in order to get the strike called. Seeing as Maddox and Smoltz aren't still pitching this season it's up to Glavine to keep the grand tradition of a wide strike zone alive.
So I'm going out on a limb and make the predictions that the Mets win tonight but Carpenter wins game 6 for the Redbirds. Mets in 7 bay-bee!! Unless I'm wrong. In that case nevermind.

We shall see. The last time Detroit played Oakland was in 1972 and they lost the ALCS 3-2. Oakland won the first of 3 straight World Series Championships in 1972. It would be fun in Detroit to get a repeat of the 1968 World Series, Tigers v. Cardinals. But it's more likely we get a repeat of the 1973 World Series, Oakland v. New York Mets. The Tigers have never played the Mets and I don't think the Cards have ever played Oakland in the World Series.

Uh As over Twins :). Believe it or not I thought this might happen, based on the way the As ended the Sox hopes by sweeping them. Big Frank's locked in and has something to prove, he's still as dangerous as almost anybody when he gets like this.
Detroit can not keep up with the Yankees, I don't think anyone else can either unfortunately.
Padres over the Cardinals. The Cards are a one man team. I think this series might go 5 games though, because that one man's a horse.
Mets-Dodgers is a tough one to call. I'll stick with the Dodgers who I thoguht would win this before game 1, even though I have my doubts now.
Dodgers over Padres, thoguht neither of these teams sound like a World Series team, that's the way I see it shaking out.
Yankmees over As. Not even the red hot As will be able to compete with that lineup. If the Yanks get ANY pitching there's no stopping them.
Yankees are World Series champs (blech), I think money has bought them a title unfortunately. That lineup's just ridiculous.

It would suck to not make the playoffs after having such a big lead six weeks ago, but when the dust settles any Detroit fan should be happy with this season.
This winter, I see Detroit making a big play for a 1b with a good stick, decent power, but most of all, good OBP. Maybe a deal with Texas for Texeria for a boat load of pitching. I was having a discussion with a fellow tiger fan and asked him what he would think about dealing a true young stud pitcher like Verlander or Zumaya for a young stud hitter like Prince Fielder. Now that would be one heck of a controversial trade.

It's starting to look inevitable though that the Twinkies will pass them by. The Minnesota boys are the only team of the 3 playing good ball right now. How the Hell do you lose a Liriano and NOT drop out of contention?? F'n hosers.
So now the real race seems to be between the Tiggers and White Sox for the wild card. Tigers look to be in good shape with a 3 game lead, but if it's still 3 games or less on Monday, things may change quickly. A Sox sweep is not out of the question, as for whatever reason, they've had the Tigers number this year and the White Sox starters are finally starting to act like the group that carried them through the post season last year. I will look back on this as a fun race if the Sox prevail, I will remember the whole year as sucking if they don't get in. I'm sure Winger feels much the same way regarding the Detroit nine.

Comments: Looks like there could be race in the AL Central after all. My White Sox appear to have righted the ship, firing on about 3.5 of their 5 SP cylinders and getting big hits from all over the roster. One of the big differences is other teams seem to finally be making mistakes against them. I don't know if it was a case of others getting up to play the world champs or what, but it seemes as if there were almost no errors or mental mistakes made against my beloved Sox until August. Last year the pale hose made a killing capitalizing on other team's mistakes. This year it seemed they had little or no opportunity to do so. But now look, A-Rod throws a double play ball away and Brandon Inge does the exact same thing for the Tigers. This combined with good to spectacular pitching and a fearsome offense had made for some good times on the SOUTH side of Chicago. South is in bold because some ESPNews nimrod referred to them as the north siders. You'd think if your job was nothing more than reporting sports you'd know the difference. I bet we'll never hear "The team from the Bronx" when they're referring to the Mets, but I digress, that's for another rant.
In any case it's shaping up to be an interesting stretch run, with the Tiggers stumbling (finally!) and the Sox serving notice that they will not go quietly into the night. The midwestern Sox get the Royals for 4 while the Detroit pussycats face the Eastern Sox for 3. Will the Tigers recover or continue to fall? Wil the Sox continue their surge or will they suffer a let down? Stayed tuned boys and girls, the best time of the season is upon us.

Comments: Sufferin: Your White Sox looked good over the weekend against the struggling Jays. The game I seen was last saturday where the White Sox beat the Jays 7-1. The White Sox pitcher (Vasquez) had a no-hitter going into the bottom of the fifth before Glaus hit a homerun over the centre field fence. On the brighter side, my 4 years old son and his 8 year old cousin got to run around the bases at the Roger Centre after the game was finished as part of the Jr. Jays promotion. There had to be at least 300 kids who participated in the event. The Jays did major renovations to the dome and it looks good.
