Comments: Hello, This is a great site! I have been trying to find the records of my Chester Springs Soldiers Orphan Home. My husbands great grandmother Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cox lived there for a few years after her father passed away in 1878. Her mother had passed away in 1872. I think she had lived there for about 7 years. She was born in 1869. I found her listed in the census records for 1880. I was hoping to find any kind of admission papers pertaining to her. Any thoughts as to where they might be? Thanks for any help you might be able to give me. Denise Hudson

Comments: My great-grandmother Sarah Catherine (Kate)Stouffer, daughter of Peter Stouffer, resided at Dayton school from 9-27-1870 to 11-4-1873. I made a copy of her diploma when Mr. McCandless was principal. Would there be additional information on students in any books published? Thanks!

Comments: Great Idea I am interested primarily because, in my great Aunt Maria Swackhammer's obit (can provide a copy,) it says she was superintendent at the Harford SOS and the Jumonsville spelled "Jeumongville")I had known that her sister Annie and she were seamstresses at Harford (1900 Census) but not that she was a superintendent. Was it a misspelling? I didn't know where Jumonsville was until yesterday when I found seven postcards dated from Feb. to Dec. 1907 addressed to Aunt Maria there in Fayette Co. She died in 1920. The obit says she was matron at the Nurses Home, State Hospital, Scranton for ten years before her death. Aunt Maria (1858-1920)was the daughter of Frederick and Mary Swackhammer, West Auburn, Susquehanna, Pa.

Comments: I am currently writing a book on The Children's Home that was located on 141 Oakland Ave, Pa. I was placed there along with my twin brother, John, by our birthmother in 1957. She died 4 days later. We lived there for 11 months. We were adopted out in May 1958. I am very interested in these orphan stories. If anyone comes across my message please contact me. I know a few of the children did end up in The Scotland School after The Children's Home closed in July 1958. I wonder if when the Orphan Home closed did anyone end up in The Children's Home. It acutally started on Highland Ave in the early 1900's in Uniontown, PA. Then went to 80 McClellandtown Road, Uniontown then to 141 Oakland Ave, Uniontown in 1919.

Comments: My paternal ggg uncle, Leonard Kelley, ended up in the Northern Home For Friendless Children in 1880, Philadelphia. His mother died in 1877 and his father died in 1879. His maternal grandmother, Johanna Roth, was supposed to care for him as she had stated in the Orphan's Court. Unfortunately, I think Johanna had other ideas with regard to offering care (and claiming monies inherited from relatives in Bavaria). Leonard followed his sister (Annie Kelley Roth, my gg grandmother) to Wilmington, DE and married Martha Fleming. They had one son, Frank Todd Kelley and in 1930, Martha was in the DE State Hospital For the Insane. She also allowed her son to die believing God and not medicine, would heal him. I think Leonard led a tragic life and Johanna Roth tossing him away probably played a part in his life. I've requested his records and hope to hear from them sometime soon.

Now I'm doing a friend's family tree and found her Grandmother in one. I have a box full of old photos of Scotland School if anyone is interested.

Comments: I had no idea these schools existed until the 1880 census was released online. I discovered my great grandfather and his brother ... James Henry and John Flick. They are listed residing at the McAlisterville School and John Caveny as head of houshold whose wife was the seamstress at the School. But I have not been able find any further information. Do you know who may have information about their parents John and Mary Flick. Thank you very much for your help.
