Comments: I grew up learning about the Holocaust from my family and from survivors that I met when visiting relatives in New York. There was never any doubt in my mind as to the horrors that had been inflicted upon humanity by the unchallenged evil that had been allowed to ravage Europe in the hopes that the Nazis would destroy the Soviets and still be brought under control when it became necessary. With the political foot-dragging by the United States the Nazi war machine was able to develop into the nearly unstoppable beast that it was, which ultimately nearly defeated the combined allied forces allayed against it; alas, this allowed for the extermination of many more innocent lives than if there had been a concerted effort to stop the genocidal acts of the Nazis from the beginning of their aggression in 1939. After everything that I had thought that I'd known about the atrocities of the Holocaust, and the stories of heroism that had come out of the unspeakable horrors, it surprised me to discover the existence of a woman who, like Oskar Schindler, saved the lives of thousands of Jews (in this case 2,500 Jewish children). I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Irena Sendler, but at the same time I feel deeply enriched for having discovered the story of her life, a story that I will now be able to share in order to help battle those who attempt to perpetuate lies about the Holocaust which they maintain 'did not happen'. I remember researching the other occupants, who were hidden with her and her family, while in my school library, and I continued to read until I was able to find out what happened to every person who was in the secret attic. It's sad this happened, but history repeats itself. As we have seen in recent news. I hope everyone will stop and think about this tragic event in particular next time they go to judge someone based on their race, religion, or where they are from. Comments: I have been reading about the Holocaust since watching Schindler's List - I haven't done it and ended without tears in my eyes. So much death, and for some people, those who died - are simply reduced to statistical data. It's quite sad, and horrifying. Family's torn apart, lives wasted - simply from the whim of a madman. I guess we just have to learn from it - nad not hate those responsible. Hate breeds a lot of things. And if we succumb to that, we would end up no better than those who did it. Comments: I guess I am one of the ignorant generation to a certain extent, born in '67 we heve no recolection of war, not even the vietnam war. Sure we see it on TV and in movies and are appauled by the things we see and hear in documentries and so on. I have seen "The Pianist" and "Schindlers List".... Ive heard stories from my parents but I am only...at 43... starting to fully understand and become emotionally conscious of the gravity and impact of the time in discussion here, and I feel incredibly touched, saddened, and guilty of the fact that I am one of millions in a generation who have no comprehension of the suffering, life lost, the senseless murder and scarred memories of millions and millions of people. I have 2 daughters myself, one 16 and one 18, the too are an ignorant generation, all that matters is material possessions, the internet, selfish needs and the nieve incomprehension of times gone by. My heart bleeds for the history of mankind and my nerves quiver for the destiny of my children.
