When I was 10 and studying at the University of Heidelberg (a gifted child), I became aware of the Halocaust through books and interactions with some of the former internees. At 14, I read The Diary of Anne Frank and recall bursting into tears and weeping almost uncontrollably. It has been 64 years since then and I continue to think of you from time to time, an innocent child being forced to spend her youth in literal captivity, missing out on the hopes and dreams of childhood. I recently found out that my great Grandfather was a Jew during those times. It was most likely he came from overseas. Which makes the whole Holocaust more significant to me. I could never imagine going through such torcher and fear. It makes me realize that I really do have a great life and that I shouldn't take anything for granted.
