We got through REFTRA in Charleston with the highest score an MSO had achieved there.We then deployed to the Med to demonstrate our new SQQ-14 sonar to the Spanish Navy at Rota and the Italians at Ancona. It was a very successful deployment with Capt. Patrick as our skipper, a great low stress CO. Lane Crocker was Chief Snipe, Tom Breagy was Ops Officer, Mr. Rhodes was Supply Officer & Mr. Pell was Comm. Officer. XO for a few months. Served under captains Thomas and Derby. I remember rough seas on our crossing to the Med. I had the Conn during the mid watch about 2 weeks out when I found our ship surrounded by 20 sperm whales. Capt. It was in Panama City at the time. I remember very few names but I was a cook and Williams was my boss. I believe the skipper was Joe Peacore. NIX was in charge of the deck force. Dennis Lake was a friend and invited this old drunk to go to church with him. I became a Christian and since 1969 have worked in Brazil as a missionary. A black guy nicknamed KILLER was a steward and used to come in and cook eggs the way the skipper wanted. We drank in the bar of a gunners mate named Archie and I believe his wife was Bertha. 1 2 3 4
