I think it was during a Med Cruise. Transferred from there to NAVCOMMSTA WASHDC. Retired after nine years. Does anyone know where LTJG Bittenbender (Mr. "B") is? I believe he was from the Chicago area. (He was our Comm. Officer) and I remember during the Cuban Missle Crisis while we were "shark fishing" off the coast of Cuba ... we caught a "big" one and he cut it's heart out and ran it into the galley and had them cook it for him! We went on the 1958 Med Cruise. Also a cruise to the Caribbean, were we helped protect Swan Island from Castro's shrimp boats. We went on a special cruise to the North Atlanta were we used an early underwater television camera to inspect the Trans Atlantic cable. I was on the Observer during three trips to the dry docks in Portsmouth, Savannah and Jacksonville. Participated in the Cuban Crisis. Made Med and Caribbean Cruises and watched John Glenn make the first orbital flight. I have been attending the USS Observer reunions for the last few years. The next one is in Pensacola,FL October 14,15 and 16. I am responsible for the USS Observer Reunion Web Site, www.ussobserver.org.
