Went to Guam (for 30 days of barnacle scraping and feuding with Marines), on the way to Subic Bay. Emergency leave cut my deployment (Operation End Sweep) short and I never made it back to the ship. I was separated in July 73 from LBeach. For those who served with me, you may remember me as the writer/producer/director of the 8mm film "Esteem's Big Score", and publisher/editor/writer of the Esteem News Vol 1 (LBeach to Pearl) and Vol 2 (Pearl to Subic). I didn't realize at the time what great times I was having. Unfortunately I don't remember some folks I served with, but it wasn't fun, it was the Navy. Grant (SSBN 631), then assigned to the USS Exploit in Charleston, SC. Two months later, I was "volunteered" TAD to the USS Esteem to embark on a journey to the Gulf of Tonkin for Operation End Sweep (1973), with stops in Hawaii, Guam (spent a night hiking/camping at Talofofo Falls(sweet!), Subic Bay Phillipines (a wild, surreal, fun place), Kaoshung Taiwan (where they threw a wonderful party for MSO crews at the Kennedy Hotel), and finally: Haiphong Harbor, North Viet Nam. It was a little unsettling enough being there, yet a couple of fools onboard gave me a hard time; generally, I got on well with everyone else. I have good memories, lots of photos, and have kept in touch with several fellow shipmates. I see names listed on this site that I can reach out to as well. Mindiv 73 was the first "Men of War" to go up the river to Saigon in 1961. We also saw duty in Thailand, Phillipines, Hong Kong, Guam, and Midway. Vietnam was relatively "quiet" at this time. We pulled liberty in Saigon and DaNang. We had a SPS 5 radar on board and were given a radar picket duty for the South Vietnamese Navy for any Southbound gunrunners. Numerous "intercepts" were made and sent to DaNang with South Vietnamese PC escorts.
