Dash won the Arleigh Burke Trophy for the most improved ship in the Atlanta Fleet in 1968. I cannot find tht award on the inetnet. If some one can help me find it I would sure appreciate it. Comments: First of all let me apologize - I did not serve on the U.S.S. Dash, but my brother did. His name was Joseph Francis Biondo and he served during the mid to later 1950's. He was a machinist mate. My brother has passed away long before he would have been aware of this website or I'm sure he would have responded to you himself. He was 57 at the time of his death. When he served with you guys I was just a little boy of about 8 or 9 years of age. I would write to him and decorate the letter with pictures of ships and soldiers. I wore his white Navy hat with pride after he got out of the service and was the envy of my school chums. He told many stories of his adventures in the Med and the many ports of call stops you guys made. He served for a total of 6 years. My brother and I come from a poor family and are first generation Americans of Italian descent. As he was dying during his illness he told me how lucky he was to have been able to see all the sights he experienced while serving in the Navy which would have otherwise been denied to him due to our circumstances. He thought a lot of you people and I'd like you to know that. Best of wishes to you all from a land-lubber ... and thank YOU and all vets for my freedom.

You can Visit our home page here: http://www.nmsoa.org I am currently working my 2009 membership drive and I have located your contact information on various e-group guest books and registration areas to do with the MSO/MCM Community or am attaching this to sites dedicated to current and former Navy personell . I would like to extend an invitation to you to join the NMSOA and become a member of our Brotherhood. We build web sites in memory of our old ships, we hang out together on various e-groups to keep in touch and we even hold an all crews reunion every two years. The last of which was held October 2007 at Corpus Christi Texas with an awesome visit to the Ingleside Naval station and a private tour of an MCM as well as the Mine Counter Measures school. If you would like to be in the company of fellow EX-MSO Sailors or Active Duty and Former MCM Sailors, The NMSOA is the place for you... I look forward to seeing you aboard! Thanks for your time, Donald L. Hawbaker
