Message Text: Today (September 6 2011) I found that my grandfather James Nicholson was Quarter Master aboard HMHS Llandovery Castle, sunk by U 86 on June 27 1918. The reasons for not knowing this sooner are complex. I am now 74, did my National Service in the RN and have a wife whose father was Captain Percy Purkis (Alfred Holt Blue Funnel). On Sunday last (4 9 11) we attended the Merchant Navy Day Service in Liverpool's St Nicholas Church - unaware of the news we would receive today through the efforts of volunteers, tracing my grandfather's death - unrecorded - until found at the Tower Hill Memorial in London. I always thought my blood tasted really salty. I feel so humbled and so proud to have been associated with you all. Thank you for letting me speak a few words.

if antone can give any tips about where to look, it would be greatly appreciated.

Message Text: Dear All,
I am currently a PhD student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. I am currently seeking to interview men who were in reserved occupations during the Second World War with particular hope of finding men who were in the Merchant Navy. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to know more information or do pass my details on to others who may wish to be interviewed.
I am also happy to hear any advice anyone may have regarding finding men who served in the service during the Second World War and any advice you could give with regards to this matter would be greatly received.
Thanks and best wishes,

Message Text: Blue funnel ships. Dads family were seafarers from Anglesey. A few year ago I was in Moelfre,a village where many Blue Funnel captains lived. The owner of the local pleasyre boat told me the following. If a Blue Funnel ship was inward bound and the captain was from Moelfre the ship would sail much closer to the coast and family members would wave sheets etc at the ship. He also told me some ships would sail between the Mouse rocks and the coast. In this instance he said Ellerman ships. If these tales are true the ships would have been an amazing sight.

Message Text: Hello Shipmates,
On Thursday 30 June 2011, outside Dail Eireann, Kildare Steet, Dublin 2, a petition was launched in support of pardons for Irish defence force personnel who had allegedly deserted the Irish defence forces during world war two and joined the RN,MN,RAF and units of the British Army to fight fascism and whom in August 1945 were dismissed en masse and in absentia via Emergency Power Order (362)introduced by the Irish government post war. Many of those unjustly convicted in absentia are at rest in various battlefields across the world. It is hoped this new Irish government has the political capacity, wisdom and compassion to revoke this legislation or use some other mechanism at their disposal and re-instate those Irish defence force alleged deserters who went to fight the Nazi terror on behalf of the free world.....their memory deserves that at least. If you wish to support view our website online for further information.
