The reasons for not knowing this sooner are complex. I am now 74, did my National Service in the RN and have a wife whose father was Captain Percy Purkis (Alfred Holt Blue Funnel). On Sunday last (4 9 11) we attended the Merchant Navy Day Service in Liverpool's St Nicholas Church - unaware of the news we would receive today through the efforts of volunteers, tracing my grandfather's death - unrecorded - until found at the Tower Hill Memorial in London. I always thought my blood tasted really salty. I feel so humbled and so proud to have been associated with you all. Thank you for letting me speak a few words. Dads family were seafarers from Anglesey. A few year ago I was in Moelfre,a village where many Blue Funnel captains lived. The owner of the local pleasyre boat told me the following. If a Blue Funnel ship was inward bound and the captain was from Moelfre the ship would sail much closer to the coast and family members would wave sheets etc at the ship. He also told me some ships would sail between the Mouse rocks and the coast. In this instance he said Ellerman ships. If these tales are true the ships would have been an amazing sight. 194 July 31 2011 at 13:16:40 Full Name: David Broadley Email: dh@broadley111.freeserve.co.uk Home Town?: London Message Text: Does anyone have photographs of steam ships owned by the Kyle Shipping Co. Many of those unjustly convicted in absentia are at rest in various battlefields across the world. It is hoped this new Irish government has the political capacity, wisdom and compassion to revoke this legislation or use some other mechanism at their disposal and re-instate those Irish defence force alleged deserters who went to fight the Nazi terror on behalf of the free world.....their memory deserves that at least.
