Message Text: I have sent the following message to the PM, Foreign Secretary and my own MP in regard to the refusal of the Russia Medal to be awarded to the Arctic veterans by the british Government to show the inconsistency in their reason for rejecting the award.
On behalf of all surviving Arctic Convoy veterans from WWII, I write with great disappointment and disbelief in regard to the Foreign Office blocking the move to award the Russian "Medal of Ushakov" to those men who endured the severe hardships, we can only imagine in the frozen Arctic in those desperate days of WWII.
The Foreign Office state that the rules of acceptance of foreign awards had to have taken place within the previous five years or that permission cannot be granted if they have received a UK award for the same services. This is somewhat contradictory to the award of the Pingat Jasa Malaysia Medal for those who served in operations in Malaya/Malaysia between August 1957 and August 1966. This medal was first struck in 2005 and in 2011 unrestricted permission was given by Her Majesty The Queen for the acceptance and wearing of this medal, even though those who served in this theatre had already received the British General Service Medal, with additional Malaya/Borneo Clasp. I would also like to point out the fact of the award of the Naval GSM and GSM with Suez Canal Zone Clasp which was awarded in 2003 to those who had served between 16th October 1951 and 19th October 1954. This award was also originally subject to the five year rule and should not be considered, which was later changed and the Honours and Decorations Committee endorsed the recommendation.
It would seem rather ironic considering the Prime Ministers recent speech the other day on national television in regard to the millions of pounds, rightly so, the Government are going to put into the forthcoming 100th Anniversary of the start of WWI, as an act of remembrance to educate those at school and the sacrifice made by so many, but they are not willing to consider an award to those veterans of WWII still living by stating a rule that has been overturned with previous awards.
On behalf of myself, those of us who have served at sea and the few remaining Arctic Heroes, I ask you to show support and let them be honoured by a country that still remembers their sacrifice.

Message Text: Does anyone remember Mr Christopher Roy Rigby? He was in the merchant navy in 1960 as an engineer. He worked on board MV Northumberland (London), MV Burutu Palm and MV Capacity. I know from his papers that during his time with Palm Line Limited he was on regular watch 8 hours per day as a 5th Engineer and dealt with Doxford O/P 2 Ccl 3000 BHP. Single Screw, Cochran & Fleming Donkey Boilers.
Sadly, he died from mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer, last year. His family would very much like to trace anyone who may have worked with him, or who could comment on what type of work he would have been doing, and whether he may have come into contact with asbestos during his work in the merchant navy.
Any help would be gratefully received. Please contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org or on 0118 9527199.

Message Text: I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on my relative William Hamilton Kelly Hunter, who according to family lore was possibly the Master of the Star of Persia (Corry line) in the latter part of the 19th century. I have a variety of trinkets that were supposedly brought back from the Calcutta run and I know my father had a very impressive model of the ship passed down through the family. The model was destroyed in German bombing of Belfast during the war.
Perhaps someone could direct me to a possible information source.

Message Text: We wish to thank everyone who attended and those who helped to make it another memorable event for the Merchant Navy.
We fully appreciate the concerns and upset caused by the early start of the Parade. This was upon orders of the Police. It was timed to start at exactly 12.30 hours, as we have always done. The reason for the early departure is being investigated.
The Committee of three have spent many more hours this year on organising the event due to the Paralympics and other problems so the early departure of the Parade was the last thing that we wanted. Also we had programmed timings for Trinity Square Gardens before the Parade arrival. Your comments on the Parade and Service are, as always, most welcome
