He didn't like to talk much about the war but I understand the Atlantic Convoys were 'hard'. I was thrilled to find your website and to know that even after all the years there is still a great deal of affection and respect for those who participated and are still participating in the Merchant Marine.
If there are any Dunkirk Veterans around I would be interested.

Message Text: RE: Asuncion de Larrinaga query.
Unfortunately there are no surviving WWI service records as they were all destroyed during WWII. Asuncion de Larrinaga (O.N. 115311) Log books and crew agreements for 1914-1918 are held at The National Archives at Kew in classification BT 165 Agreements and Crew Lists under the ship O.N. The only surviving records for this ship cover, 1916 BT 165/1428 & 1918 BT 165/1805.

Message Text: I would appreciate it if anyone could help me find some information. My grandfather sailed on a ship called Asuncion de Larrinaga. I know it was used as a military transport from 1915-1919 and he was serving at this time. I would like to know more about its movements and also would like to try and get his service records including any other ships he was on. Could anyone tell me how I can do this. I have tried quite a lot of websites but so far haven't been able to find one that gives me any relevant information.
I would be very grateful for any help with this.

He turns 70 on Oct 4th 2008.He has always talked about his merchant navy days and I enjoy listening about the good old days. His happiest memories were on the Riebeeck Castle. He was on the Riebeeck from Sept 1958-July 1959 as 2nd Steward, with Captain Carr. I am trying to put together anything regarding the Riebeeck Castle for him, such as photos, stories or contacts that might remember him.

Message Text: I've really enjoyed reading this website for my research into the Merchant Navy and hope that some of you might be able to help me.
I am researching WWII for a series of documentaries for Channel 4. I would love the opportunity to speak to anybody who remembers the Battle of the Atlantic, in particular if you served in the earlier years of WWII.
I'd be really interested to hear from you if you were aboard a convoy that was targetted by German torpedo - for example if you were aboard SS Athenia or the Royal Oak in 1939 or Convoy SC 7 or SC-42 heading from Canada to Britain in 1940 and 1941 respectively.
Please feel free to contact me if you remember these events or have an interesting story that you'd like to share.
Thanks so much and I hope to hear from you soon.

My GR GR Grandfather Richard Profet and his brother James both Mariners, Merchant Seaman were "accidently drowned" Holyhead Bay on 19 Feb 1868. Death Certificate states that an Inquest was held on 21 Feb 1868 with the death being registered on 27 May 1868.
Does anyone know of a shipwreck or maritime incident or similar around that time.
Any help would be appreciated on the above.
