I know she was designated as an Armed Merchant Cruiser during World War 1 but I have some information showing she transported troops from canada to England in 1916 and 1917 as well. Specifically I have a photo of her taken in November 1916 inscribed "TS Armadale Castle" on the reverse. Can anyone verify that she did in fact transport Canadian Troops and also if troop manifests would have ever been kept showing the soldiers names aboard? Many thanks. Williams who crossed the Equator on 14th February 1908 aboard the S.S. Braemar Castle of the Union Castle Line, also referred to in the souvenir Certificate as HMT Braemar Castle, Transport no. 6; commander S. Henderson RNR. There was an Equatorial Court of Justice to celebrate the crossing into 'the Dominions of King Neptune' presided over by Commander Henderson, with C. E. Lord as Presiding Magistrate; A. G. Clouting, MD, as Clerk of Court; M. P. Hinds as Lord Chamberlain. John 823 November 10 2008 at 14:40:01 Full Name: Arthur J.Harvey Email: ajcw46@sampan.karoo.co.uk Home Town?: beverley,east yorkshire Message Text: -------------------------------------TIRPITZ MUSEUM------------------------------------------- In August this year I visited the north of Norway on the cruise ship Discovery and the last port of call was Alta which enable me to visit the TIRPITZ museum.From there I went to a local cemetery at KAFJORD where there is a grave for eleven crew members of the X Craft submarines which attacked the TIRPITZ.For me it proved to be a very moving experience as I stood at that grave side I was aware that these seamen were naerly about my age and that they died in 1943,since then I have had another 65 years and this was when it came home to me how lucky I had been having had five years of sea time in the war and not getting my feet wet.The captain of the Discovery laid some flowers on behalf of the ship having been chief office of the Atlantic Conveyor when sunk in the Falklands.At the grave side was an elderly lady who planted a cross on the grave, I later learnt that she was the teen age sweet heart of one of the crew and she had never married in the 65 years.May I remark that the captain had a lot of respect for veteran seamen like myself, a complete difference from my experienc of Masters of the PO cruise ships.
