I was not MN at all. In fact, I was Army for over 30 years but I know you are a forgiving lot. The real reason I am cluttering up your inbox is, I am researching my dad, Hugh Affleck who was MN from 39-43 with the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co on board the tankers Cliona and Daphnella. In doing so, I found your site. Very professional, very tidy and I enjoyed it a great deal. Well done those responsible. Cheers.

Message Text: Greetings one and all and a very Merry Xmas, and a Happy and healthy 2009 to you all. How long will it be before the greedy shipowners will stop the wages of the crew of any ship taken by pirates until the ransom is paid or the ships released by the RN.

Message Text: News today (Fri) of yet another merchant ship taken by “pirates” this time in the Gulf of Aden. Have we forgotten the lessons so hard learned that ships in convoy are much easier to protect also given that the Royal Navy has shrunk so much in recent years. All merchant ships must be protected irrespective of flag. Talk about the old adage: “those who ignore history are bound to repeat it”.

I served in Deck department from Deck boy fresh out of the NSTS at Gravesend in 68 and finally left the Sea as a Boatswain in 84. A time that I considered to be the Golden times of a dying breed. It was a great life but sadly not the same these days. Darn container ships !!!!

Disappointed with the comments regarding the Sirius Star that indicated the RN should not be involved in anti piracy operations in this case due to port of registry, ownership and lack of a substantial Saudi Arabian Navy. Perhaps we should think of the crew, and give them a fair go irrespective of our political view of the matter.

Message Text: HAVE READ WITH INTEREST THE VARIOUS COMMENTS RE PIRACY OF THE STAR SIRIUS AND THE VARIOUS CALLS FOR ACTION FROM THE RN; MAYBE WE SHOULD STOP AND THINK THAT THE RN IS FINANCED BY THE BRITISH TAX PAYER AND RIGHLY SHOULD PROTECT WHERE POSSIBLE SHIPS FLYING THE RED ENSIGN, HOWEVER, THIS LATEST HIGH JACK WAS ON A SHIP FLYING THE FLAG OF CONVENIENCE
USING CHEAP CREWING LABOUR, INSURANCE, ETC...THE OWNERS OF THIS VESSEL BELONG TO A WEALTHY NATION BUT WITH A VERY LIMITED NAVY, IT SHOULD BE THEIR PROBLEM TO PROTECT SHIPS FLYING THEIR FLAG.SUCH A SIZE SHIP, THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF THE USA AIRCRAFT CARRIERS AQND WITH ONLY A CREW OF 25 PERSONS THIS IS QUESTIONABLE PLUS THERE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A LACK OF ANTI PRIACY EQUIPMENT WHICH THE COMPANY COULD AFFORD. I DO NOT CONDONE PRIACY IN ANY FORM BUT SHIP OWNERS MUST TAKE AND PAY FOR THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS.
LETS NOT FORGET THAT DUE TO THE FLAG OF CONVENIENCE THERE ISONLY JUST OVER SIX HUNDRED SHIPS FLYING THE RED ENSIGN MOST OF WHICH ARE FERRY BOATS.

Message Text: Hello, I am doing some research on the Union Castle Company ship Armadale Castle. I know she was designated as an Armed Merchant Cruiser during World War 1 but I have some information showing she transported troops from canada to England in 1916 and 1917 as well. Specifically I have a photo of her taken in November 1916 inscribed "TS Armadale Castle" on the reverse. Can anyone verify that she did in fact transport Canadian Troops and also if troop manifests would have ever been kept showing the soldiers names aboard?

Message Text: What a wonderful website. Greetings to everyone. I'm researching my family history and have found a 1908 'Neptune's Certificate' celebrating the crossing of the Equator. My (probable) relative is Gunner G. A. Williams who crossed the Equator on 14th February 1908 aboard the S.S. Braemar Castle of the Union Castle Line, also referred to in the souvenir Certificate as HMT Braemar Castle, Transport no. 6; commander S. Henderson RNR. There was an Equatorial Court of Justice to celebrate the crossing into 'the Dominions of King Neptune' presided over by Commander Henderson, with C. E. Lord as Presiding Magistrate; A. G. Clouting, MD, as Clerk of Court; M. P. Hinds as Lord Chamberlain. Can anyone tell me more about these people, or the movements of the Braemar Castle and the troops it carried at the time - or suggest further sources of information? I'm a complete novice regarding naval matters! Thanks - Jan

For instance: does anyone have any knowledge of Captain John Thurston Ling of the SS Advisor which was torpedoed but subsequently saved off Durban in 1942. I have good details of the event, but would like to know morte about John Ling iff possible. He was trained in Conway.

Message Text: -------------------------------------TIRPITZ MUSEUM-------------------------------------------
In August this year I visited the north of Norway on the cruise ship Discovery and the last port of call was Alta which enable me to visit the TIRPITZ museum. From there I went to a local cemetery at KAFJORD where there is a grave for eleven crew members of the X Craft submarines which attacked the TIRPITZ.For me it proved to be a very moving experience as I stood at that grave side I was aware that these seamen were naerly about my age and that they died in 1943,since then I have had another 65 years and this was when it came home to me how lucky I had been having had five years of sea time in the war and not getting my feet wet.The captain of the Discovery laid some flowers on behalf of the ship having been chief office of the Atlantic Conveyor when sunk in the Falklands. At the grave side was an elderly lady who planted a cross on the grave, I later learnt that she was the teen age sweet heart of one of the crew and she had never married in the 65 years.May I remark that the captain had a lot of respect for veteran seamen like myself, a complete difference from my experienc of Masters of the PO cruise ships.
Watching the service at the Albert Hall on saturday I along with many others was discussed with the BBC input for the MN however it is not unexpected.Having on many occassions worn my V badge since it was issued I have only been asked once what it stands for otherwise there has been no one has shown interest and I live in a MN city. Can anyone tell me how one obtains a ticket for the Albert Hall memorial service before I get to old or is it the same persons every year.
