By 1941 my father Herbert Buglass Lowrie was a Radio Officer or training to be a Radio Officer but strangely gives an address c/o Airwaves Ltd, No 1 Observer School Wigtown. This is an RAF Station. Does anybody know where I can find a list of people who qualified in the UK for a Maritime Postmaster General's Certificate (which qualified you to be a Radio Officer) between 1937 and 1942. Does anybody have any idea what Airwaves Ltd was doing in Wigtown during the war as I cannot find any reference to them. Lloyd's states one crew and one gunner killed during the operation to relieve Malta. Found the gunner through the Deaths at Sea Register and is confirmed as: BROWN, Gunner, PETER, 1823820, 7/4 Maritime Regt., Royal Artillery. 13 August 1942. Age 38. Son of Ellen Brown, of St. Helens, Lancashire Nothing on any crew member registered within the CWGC, until I found an entry in the December 1942 Register for Ohio and a Steward named Raymond Banner from Methil who is recorded as dying on the 26th September 1942 at Malta from Peritonitis. I'm going to see if I can find where he is buried, Seems terrible that someone who survived what he went through and to die anyway and be completely forgotten is unjust. There are 11 Merchant Seamen buried on Malta on the Capuccini Naval Cemetery. Two are recorded as official war dead while the other nine are recorded as "non war dead" though their graves are looked after by the Commission. Why has Raymond Banner been forgotten. Early on in his career he was on the SS Ulstermore travelling between Baltimore, USA and Liverpool and landed in the UK on the 29 January 1909. Ltd) had been sailing in the 32 ship Convoy HG-7 on voyage from Durban to Dunkirk via Gibraltar & Rouen with a cargo of maize. On the 19th November 1939 the ship was intercepted and sunk by U-49 North-West of Cape Oretegal and sank in position 46' 51N 11' 36W without loss of life. The Captain and crew were rescued by the Destroyer HMS Echo and transferred to the Destroyer HMS Wanderer before being landed at Plymouth. Her last Log Book & Crew Agreements are held at Kew under the ships Official No. 143999 in BT 381/173. My father joined the MN in July 1936 as a Galley Boy on SS Pensilva. The Pensilva was sunk early in the war I think off the coast of Spain. I do not know if he was still a crew member then. He was discharged from the MN on the grounds of ill-health in 1943. I believe by then he was a Radio Officer. His name Herbert Buglass Lowrie. Claims submitted outside the period specified in this clause however,may in exceptional circumstances be accepted by decision of the executive council)May I slso draw your attention to rule 14, clause 15 which reads (The old age grant shall be wound up from the 31st 12 1981, and any monies remaining therin shall be transferred to the general funds of the union.
