Message Text: I am researching the experiences of my father during WW1. He was a wireless operator in the Merchant Navy and we know he sailed on the following ships:- bellerophon, memnon, roda, yangtse, irishman, abinsi, georgic, campania, bradstone, northpoint, novan, oronsa or obonsa. He took troops into and out of Gallipoli, he went to Archangel, he relayed instructions by radio to the ship's doctor on how to remove an appendix, and he told us that three ships were sunk by enemy fire after he left them. I think one was the Georgic which went down with 1300 horses on board - the crew were saved bar one.
I have a couple of medals we found but all we heard from him were little snippets and of course we never knew what it must have been like.
Any help in piecing togather the jigsaw would be appreciated.

Message Text: Can anyone suggest if a source exists to recover details of one's discharge book entries - I have my old number - but it may be stretching it a bit since my sea-going days were 50's/6o's.
Mine was 'lost' under the 'prevention of returning to sea act'excercised by a female acquaintance. Although I received a new replacement there were no entries.
Any ideas ? Thanks. All the best to all who shared the great experience at sea.

Message Text: I am a co-editor on a website dealing with the history of the RFA, at the moment we have an on-going project that we would like some help with please.
We are trying to record the names and details of every man who served on an RFA during the Falklands War as the records do not appear to be in any of the usual places. Could I ask that if you served on an RFA during this period, or you know of someone who did then please get in touch so that we can record the details for posterity and as a lasting record.
Thank you, your help will be much appreciated.

Message Text: I am one of two editors of a relatively new website that records the history of the RFA, and I would like to appeal for some help please.
We are trying to compile a list of the crews from each of the 22 RFA Ships that served in the Falklands in 1982, unfortunately the Registrar of Seamen and Shipping do not hold this information and it is not held by the National Archive.
If you served on an RFA during the Falklands, could I ask you to get in touch and register your details with us, or if you know others who served, could you please let us have their name and rank as well as what ship they were on.

Message Text: I visited the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas last week. Very well worth a trip. The Merchant Navy Convoy Wood is particilarly evocative. One oak tree for every ship sunk in WW2. It's a BIG area as you can well imagine! There is a book held in the Chapel containing the name of every M.N. sailor lost. They are listed under the name of the ship they were serving on.
Choose a dry day.
