He sailed on the AVONDALE CASTLE from 4th October 1901 until 14th April 1908. In 1898 he sailed on the MONTANA until 6th September 1899. Can you please tell me which shipping line the Montana was?

Message Text: Ref message from George Griffiths of Perth, Oz.
Was at the Vindicatrix 52/53 looking for anyone from thet period.
I don't remember names so well now, I was at the Vindi around that time, but I was 18 in '53 and got my EDH in Falmouth on my 18th birthday (7th April). My first trip after leaving the Vindi was on the British Prudence. I joined her in Antwerp and sailed for Mina and then on to Singapore - Polo Sambo and on from there. So I must have been at the Vindi in 52.
Do you remember Capt Dougan and John Wayne? and the Vindi song?
How did you finish up in Oz?
I'd like to hear from you,

BBC Radio 4 is making a programme, presented by Peter Snow, about 'The Yellow Fleet' - the ships which were trapped in the Suez Canal for 8 years following the 1967 six day war. Four of the ships were British: MS Agapenor; MS Melampus; MS Scottish Star and MS Port Invercargili. We'd very much like to find people who were on those ships at the time of the closure of the Suez canal so we can record their memories for the programme. Please contact the producer, Karen Gregor, firstname.lastname@example.org or 0121 567 6739. We're recording the programme throughout May and June, for broadcast on Radio 4 in November. Many thanks, Karen.

Message Text: I am researching Captain John McWhir,(1853-1895),an Ulsterman from Ballyhalbert,County Down,Ireland, master of the iron barques Highland Forest and Highland Home. Both originally owned by Messrs Crane Colvil of Glasgow, later by James R.Cuthbertson also of Glasgow
after about 1888.Joseph Conrad, the author, sailed as First Mate on the Highland Forest under McWhir's command in 1887 from Amsterdam to the Far East.
John McWhir was lost, with his wife and son,and 17 crew,on the Highland Home, when the steel hawser snapped in a SW Force 12 storm in late 1895,when it was being towed from Fleetwood to London by the new steam tug The Warrior. The wreck site is at Freshwater Bay,near St Anne's Head,Milford Haven,Pembrokeshire.
The Highland Forest was lost off Freemantle,Australia in 1901.
I am also researching the other two sister ships The Highland Chief, lost off Boulogne,France,on its maiden run to Australia as well as the Highland Glen, which later became The Nuuanu, and was captained in the American merchant marine by Walter Lyman Josselyn of Duxbury,Mass. (1841-1913) between 1896 and 1912.She lasted until the late 1920's or so in the Philippines. [See the book Down Easter Captain by his grandson Captain W.J.Moore]
All four barques were built by Messrs Ramage & Ferguson,of Leith,Scotland,in the 1880's.

Message Text: I was an EDH on the RFA Barfoss in Port Side during the Suez Crisis in 1956. We were all sent home on the 21st December '56 when the UN tookover operations. We shipped out on the HMS Anzio and after five days of force 10 gales we arrived in Malta, shaken but not deterred. From there we flew back home in a military plane to Blackbush. During operations in Portside, we were constantly under sniper fire from the shore as they did not want us clearing the canal. The Royal Marine petrols kept a constant vigil, keeping us safe, and the HMS Devon was our Depot ship which kept us supplied with beer and movies etc. The comradeship was amazing, I'd like to hear from anyone else who was there.

Now that we are recognised as one of the forces, does that qualify me for a gong?
