It was supposed to be Home Trade, Rotterdam to Hull. Ten months later paid off in Emden, only then as she broke down in a gale and had to be towed in. Not a happy ship, crew figured B.M. Shanghaied us. Still, visited, Quebec, New Orleans, Galverston, B.A. and ports in Africa and Europe. In 1956 I sailed on the La Cumbre of Buries Markes which had been built as the Empire McDermott. In the officers saloon was a painting/picture of the ship in her wartime role. Robert P McLean. He was from Barrhead Scotland He contracted smallpox in 1942 enroute from India to Australia. He was quarantined in Sydney I beleive and caught up with his ship in Melbourne. He was taken care of by 2 volunteer nurses (Develin & Smythe) not sure of the spelling. He received many cards and letters from people in Australia (some had sent him money) He was 21 years old. I am going to Australia in 2011 December and want to go to the Quarantine Station...
