I am looking to find some information regarding my grandfather John Edward Ling R143442 who was reported missing from the Ashanti in June 1944 the ship as far as i am aware did not go down but, so far I have been unable to find out what happened to him, I know there is a very slim chance of any one still being alive that sailed on her at the same time as my grandfather but if anyone could give me some hope I would be truly grateful of any information regarding him. 254 March 06 2011 at 20:43:00 Full Name: Ron Read Email: raread1@me.com Home Town?: Perth Western Australia Message Text: Hello to you all,My first ship in 1966 was the Helcion a Shell Tanker.any old shipmates reading this maybe? we joined our ship in Camel Lairds then we sailed to Brazil what times we had lad,s best not tell the wife,s!!! 255 March 06 2011 at 14:03:13 Full Name: Fred Andrews Email: R266198@aol.com Home Town?: Corsham Message Text: s.s. If he left the sea in 1926 any surviving records will be held in the 1913-1940 Fourth Register of Seamans Service. Although the Fourth Register started in 1913 all records up to 1918 have been destroyed so you will not be able to find his war service. These records are available at The National Archives at Kew in the United Kingdom and are held on Microfiche in the following classifications BT 348: Register of Seamen, Central Index, Numerical Series (CR 2), BT 349: Register of Seamen, Central Index, Alphabetical Series (CR 1) and BT 350: Register of Seamen, Special Index, Alphabetical Series (CR 10). These three classes were combined in one classification namely BT 364 Register of Seaman, Combined Numerical Index (CR1, CR 2 & CR 10) and were made up by extracting combinations of cards from the other three classes. The original records for the above named classifications are now held at the following address: Southampton Archives, Southampton City Council, South Block, Civic Centre, Southampton, S014 7LY. Tel: 023 8083 2251 Fax: 023 8083 215 E-Mail city.archives@southampton.gov.uk This office is open Tuesdays to Fridays 9.30am to 4.30pm, with one late evening opening each month. There is no charge for a personal visit. Alternatively enquiries for information from the records may be made by post, e-mail or fax but there will be a charge for this. There is no surviving WWI Medal Index Card for a Frank Moreton Diggle, though if he served during the war he would have been entitled to the War Medal & Mercantile Marine Medal. 265 February 20 2011 at 18:43:22 Full Name: Colin Ball Email: colinball75@hotmail.com Home Town?: Bridgend, South Wales Message Text: I came across this site and organization after meeting an old shipmate of mine from 1969/70. I am looking for veterans who served on ships which were attacked. It brought back many memories. In the mid 60s when I was a student in Southampton, I had a summer-long break so decided to join the Merchant Navy as a steward. I had previously worked my summer holidays with Red Funnel Isle of Wight ferries. I was duly hired and joined Cunard's Franconia as a tourist class steward. Alas I was not very good. Old hands had a betting ring to see how many trays I would drop. Needless to say I did not have the makings of a career merchant seaman, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. To this say still dine out on my many experiences. Cheers! 272 February 13 2011 at 00:14:19 Full Name: Richard Quartermaine Email: zaz581@live .com Home Town?: Katoomba, Blue Mountains, Australia Message Text: I was delighted to find images of the SS Beltana. For myself, the nearest I came to serving in any Navy was a week on TS Foudroyant in 1959 (now renamed HMS Trincomalee) an experience I have never forgotten. For good reasons I may add.
