Ltd) sailed from Southampton in ballast bound for Avonmouth. On the 24th May in the English Channel in position 50' 07N 01' 30W, about 30 nautical miles South, South-West of Ventnor, Isle of Wight the ship detonated a mine with the eventual loss of three crewmembers. The Deaths at Sea Register, states the Chief Engineer and one Seaman died in Falmouth Bay, while the ships Bosun died in Falmouth Hospital the following day. The National Archives at Kew hold a Survivors Report from the incident in question held in file BT199/2137 and can be ordered online. Important that you ask for the report of the Octane starting from page 122 in this file and any pages after (average reports usually consists of two pages) as these files cover incidents over May/July 1941. 10 May 20 2013 at 13:27:18 Full Name: Martyn Richard Bowler Email: masaro@eastlink.ca Home Town?: Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada Message Text: Originally a Grimsby Boy. I have tried lots of websites but I get the answer "no results found" so I am at the end of my resources now , and wished I had listened to the sea stories my uncle told me and paid attention.
