I was asked to write an article for Scooterist Scene Magazine re Raff's. The problem is that your site is so informative that I can't see the point! I have started and have spoken, briefly, to Geoff Stevens. Perhaps we could meet up sometime? All was my own development work and I kept going on second hand parts from the many scrapped scooters found around Dagenham. I made my way through the newcomers and into the 150cc standard class where I lead or seconded most races until the second hand cranks and pistons threw. As a yougster I had many big names wanting to mentor me,one being the late great Nev Frost but I was to far away and at 16 had no real transport, relying on scrounging space for my Lambretta and I to get to racing. I followed Nev into bike racing as soon as I was working,he won Lord of Lydden and I nearly did to with a second place some years later until a back marker I was lapping swept me off on the last bend. I went on to production racing on an H1 500 Kawasaki beating the legendary Tom Pemberton. All history now as the wench at the time put her foot down after a couple of bad spills. I can rember being well in front of you until detonation. Cadwell Park and Snetteton rings a bell. They have scooter racing in France with these 50cc Peugeots and Mallaguttis that do 30mph until you remove the restrictors and then they do 70 mph comfortably.when you tweak the barrels, carb it to suit and put in the competition belts and clutches they go like rockets. The last event I went to was when I moved to Kent and my boy was not long borne. It was at Lydden in `87 and I`d spotted a poster. Ray Kemp was still at it and I bumped into an old campaigner who used to live in my street in Dagenham,Dick Thompson. He was in the Cosortiunm Club and it was he who got me involved in the first place. Thanks for the memories.
