How good do you think this site is: Looks nice Comments: Saw you had listed errors in the book. Here are some to consider: Page 78 (Possible error) There was a uniform in the locker. Not the pale green of the Launchies, but the orange-trimmed dark green of Salamander Army. It did not fit well. But then, they had probably never had to provide such a uniform to a boy so young. The description above shows that Ender's uniform was too big, since he was only six. However, on page 92 we read about Ender getting a new uniform and flash suit on his seventh birthday: …they took his measurements and issued him a new Salamander uniform and a new flash suit for the battleroom. He went back to the barracks with the new clothing on. It felt strange and loose, like his skin no longer fit properly. There are a number of possible explanations - other than it just being an error. Ender may have had his original uniform adjusted to fit better. Then, when he got his new uniform, it may actually have fit looser than his old one since he was still younger than normal for a soldier (from page 69: "Nobody got promoted before they were eight years old"). However, it does say the school "took his measurements". To be at all consistent, it would seem to require that the measurements were not for the purpose of making a uniform that was the correct size, but rather the measurements would have merely been done so as to select a pre-existing uniform that would be as close as possible to his size, but still too big due to his age until he could have it adjusted later. It is also possible that in the second example, he is talking about his flash suit rather than his uniform, although I don't know how that would solve the problem. I suspect this is just an error, though certainly not an important one. ============ Page 92 (Possible error) Ender began to realize that Condor Army, which had beaten them, was unusually good; Salamander, weak as Bonzo’s grasp of strategy might be, was one of the better teams, climbing steadily in the ratings, clawing for fourth place with Rat Army. Condor Army was the first army Salamander fought after Ender joined Salamander. Salamander was "clawing for fourth place with Rat Army" so we don't know if Salamander and Rat were tied or not. It is likely then that Salamander was either fourth or fifth. Condor, being "unusually good", must have been higher ranked, but whether third, second, or first is hard to tell. However, if they were first, probably something other than "unusually good" would have been used to describe them. But on page 100 we find a new description. Page 100 (Description of Rat Army’s placement - Possible error) His army was in second place, bucking for first. [Compare to page 92 – how much time elapsed between? Ender turned 7 in between] ========== Page 104-105 (Possible error) “You're going down in the standings, boy,” said Rose. “I expect to. I was only leading the list because of the stupid way Salamander Army was using me.” Battle came two days later. It was Ender's first time fighting as part of a toon; he was nervous. Ender led the list of soldiers originally because in his first battle as part of Salamander Army, he did not fire a shot (giving him a perfect "hit" record per shot fired) and was never disabled. In his final battle, he violated his orders by firing his weapon - but he froze five boys in that battle before being disabled. As shown in the second quote above, two days after the exchange between Rose and Ender, he was going to have his first battle as a member of Rat Army. So, how could he be going down when he hadn't fought yet? However, this may not actually be an error. At least there is a perfectly reasonable way of interpreting this. "You're going down…" may not refer to what is going on, but what WILL happen. Certainly Ender's response of "I expect to" tends to make it look as if he is referring to the future. Page 178 (Possible error) Rabbit Army was able to drive back C toon’s attack, but not until Crazy Tom and his boys had carved them up, freezing a dozen Rabbits before retreating to the safety of a star. But it was a star behind the Rabbit formation, which meant they were going to be easy pickings now. This is not exactly an error, but the phrasing above makes it unclear who is "easy pickings". Most likely it is the Rabbit formation, but not necessarily. Page 272 (Possible error): “So Dr. Device isn’t a missile – I can’t shoot around corners.” When Dr. Device is used against Lusitania (See Children Of The Mind), it was on a missile. Of course, that could be because of changes in technology over the long period of time between the two events. So, it may not be an error at all. Page 292 (Error) The enemy outnumbered him a thousand to one; the simulator glowed green with them....The planet was at the far edge of the field, and for all Ender knew there were just as many enemy ships beyond it, out of the simulator's range. A bit further on the page we find this: As for his own fleet, it consisted of twenty starships, each with only four fighters...Eighty fighters, against at least five thousand, perhaps ten thousand enemy ships. A little math shows that 80 fighters, if outnumbered a thousand to one, would have to be facing 80,000 enemy ships. As it was, he was outnumbered between 250 to one and 500 to one. Page 315 (Possible error) And from the slings that once were used to carry infants along with adults into the fields, he learned that even though the Buggers were not much for individuality, they did care for their young.
