According to this writer, Billy was DID "before" the abuse started. Actually this isn't true. Like Billy, we also suffered severe and early infant body trauma. When Billy was one month old, he was rushed to the ER by his parents and nearly died due to a growth in his esophagus. (The Minds of Billy Milligan, pg. 132) He was in and out of hospitals his first year. we needed surgery immediately after we were born to correct a "defect" (as our birth-mother called it). we also had a second surgery as a follow-up to the first when we were 1 1/2 yrs old. Even though we don't remember these surgeries, our body does. Now, we're not saying everyone who has surgery as an infant becomes DID. Yet, when this early trauma is followed up with CONTINUOUS and REPEATED TRAUMATIC emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse, the potential for DID is established! we resented being called a liar because we didn't know what our other people were doing and/or saying. we still loose things, "lose time" (as Billy calls it) and get lost while driving roads we've driven for over 15 yrs. (the "kids" have been told not to drive, and they don't always obey.) So, until you've experienced what it is like to "live" (?) (sometimes we feel as though we just 'exist') as a "multiple," saying someone became DID without any trama, needs to look a little deeper. we appreciate everyone keeping an open mind to those things which you have not experienced. thank you from cathy's people... Shortly after Fox signed this guestbook, the system experienced a sort of collapse, and we're still getting things back together. I just wanted to say, I have doubting issues (so much so, some of my headmates have taken to calling me 'Doubting D**'), and when I'm about to fall into the clutches of doubt, your site helps me. It's helped me realize that WE are not the problem, the problem is society telling us we're sick, insane, or even nonexistent. We are completely functional, yet we have to deal with this, & it hurts us. It's a big factor in what caused the collapse, & it makes me angry, because now several of our members are withdrawn or missing or traumatized, & it's not fair. So I just wanted to thank you for your site; it's inspiring & without it we'd probably be even worse off than we are. Thanks, sincerely, for helping me & others learn that plurality is not wrong, and that we shouldn't have to destroy eachother just to make society comfortable. When the cyclists were probably purchased by a disabled person which only had a few things, and could not carry that far. Actually, in this case would rather someone be so organized that for the disabled person buys or drives him home, instead of that he still struggled through the area must carry, but it is rejected. I would like to see them being educated on how to see us not as fragments, but as real people in our own right, and definitely not 'broken pieces of an individual.' I would like to see this issue being brought to all the networks, so-called counselors, even to the elementary schools. I would like to see my mother and brother not immediately assume that all plurals are crazy; maybe even be able to tell them what I am. I would like to see my normally very aware friend understand what a plural really is- not just a disorder, but a natural occurence. That is what I would like them to see.
