Comments: Hi Chris. No need to fuss at anyone about the Buffy books or anything -- after all, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. :) Anyway, Para-Net, which was bought by Sisna sometime ago, announced it would no longer host the free sites set up for the authors and artists by Para-Net's previous owner. I fought it out with the new owners as long as I could, but ultimately they pulled them all, and Brian's was one of those. As far as I know, he has not yet selected a new home for his web site. When he does, I'll post it up here and put it in the Hall of Links on my site, as well.

Comments: Hey Von....

Been a while since I've written you (but not on this message board), but I just wanted to make a few comments and ask you a question. First of all, I think you are a terrific writer...and I look forward to reading the new non-horror book....and what's with Butch anyway? Keep those kinda comments to yourself, please...all they do is incite a friggin' flame-war. And being a serious, published writer (and yes, I like the Buffy TV show)...what the hell is YOUR problem? Just because she writes an occasional Buffy novel, so what? It is a fun TV show and I am sure the books are fun to write. Get off your soapbox, pal. And like she stated, writing those books allows her to write other things (things YOU may prefer to read), so stop opening your mouth like that and shooting yourself in the proverbial foot.

Anyway....Von, what has happened to Brian Hodge's Official Website? I tried to get to it and found it isn't available...is there a problem you know of...or is Brian switching to another server? Please lemme know...

Chris

Comments: Hi Ron. Thanks for your kind words about THAT'S NOT MY NAME -- I hope you still like it when you finish it. Yes, barring anything weird, I'll be at the WFC in Montreal. I haven't missed a WFC in too many years to remember (which just proves I'm too old to remember!).

Comments: Hi Yvonne,

I am about 100 pages into THAT'S NOT MY NAME and I am loving it! I'm relatively new to your work, having "discovered" you through Masters Of Terror, but am quickly becoming a fan. I have read a couple of your works in anthologies as well, Darkside and Psychos come to mind, and have enjoyed each one.

I ran into Weston in a chat room last night and he mentioned you might be going to the World Fantsay Con in Montreal in November? I live an hour and a half away, and am very tempted to go myself since WHC in Seattle is beyond my budget.

Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and thank you for the good reads you've provided me with. I usually steer clear of TV tie-in books, but who knows, you might have me reading Buffy books soon enough!

Take care,

Ron

Comments: T.C. -- I think it's great that your daughter reads so much! I don't remember what got me started, but I read everything I could get my hands on, way beyond my grade level. I used to go to the Library with a metal grocery shopping cart and the Librarians would wince when they saw me drag it through the door. I had big collections of Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, all kinds of stuff. I was only in the 7th grade when I found a copy of "Scream and Scream Again" by Peter Saxon way up on top of the frig (where my Mom thought it was safe to hide it). Again, very excellent about your daughter!

Comments: Butch, you're a dick. Seriously, man. Pure dick.
Ms. Navarro, I agree with you 100% regarding the Buffy books and kids. Whatever gets 'em reading, I say. I'm almost embarrassed to admit reading V.C. Andrews when I was a kid...Flowers in the Attic hooked me on books for the rest of my life, horror and otherwise. My ten-year-old daughter *never* read for pleasure until she discovered The Adventures of Captain Underpants...now she reads Poe. When she's a bit older, I'll have a nice copy of Afterage waiting for her on my bookshelf.

Comments: Butch -- While I sincerely appreciate that you like my work, again, the Buffy books serve their purpose -- they get the kids to read and they help me earn a living so that I can work on those other projects you want to see so badly. Unless you can afford to pay me a salary so I can write things like Mirror Me and That's Not My Name, please don't denigrate the publisher who's feeding me (and a lot of other very good writers in the same position). The fact is, I put just as much effort into the writing I do for the Buffy books as I do for my own stuff-- I just do it within the realm of the Buffy universe. Thanks.

Comments: Wow, three people firing off questions! Well, let's answer them all!

Weston, thanks for the nice words about That's Not My Name. I'm glad you're enjoying it. In Kali, we're taught that the most important word used to describe the art is "flow"-- the body moves in a constantly flowing motion. "Flow-spar" is used by our academy to describe two opponents who spar with sticks in a pre-practiced continuous pattern of strikes and blocks. While the pattern is already something with which the combatants are familiar, it is not easy; advanced participants aren't fooling around and must strike and block properly or risk getting injured.

Butch, it's really neat that you hunt up my new stuff, but it's too bad you think the Willow books are "drivel." I like them, and they have a twofold benefit: Not only do they help me out with that "making a living" thing in a time when the publishing industry in general has gotten really tight and difficult, but they are a stepping stone for young adult readers. The teenagers who read and enjoy these books today will hopefully keep reading as adults, not just my work but fiction in general. Even if you don't care for them, perhaps you have a youngster in your family who will.

Mike, thanks for the kind words about Final Impact and Red Shadows. Unfortunately the third book I'd planned isn't likely to happen since despite decent sales, the publisher isn't interested anymore (see above paragraph). You can order That's Not My Name right off its page on my site, if you like. As far as the typo on the FAQs page, considering the site consists of 108 pages, one little typo (already fixed, by the way), isn't too bad. I never said I was perfect, and I'm pretty sure my reference on the FAQs page is about the use of apostrophes. As for the last thing question, there are pictures all over the site, but they already show as much "more of me" as I'm willing to show! ::grin::

I SWEAR,BETWEEN YOU & RAY GARTON,WASTING YOUR "STELLAR TALENT"ON DRIVEL SUCH AS "BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER",IS REALLY A STUPENDOUS WASTE!!!! Comments: Three things:

1) I greatly enjoyed both "Final Impact" and "Red Shadows". When is the next entry in the series coming? I'm dying to know what happens next! Also, I will try to find "That's Not My Name". You've got me hooked.

2) It seems ironic that on your FAQs page where you rail against sloppy writing and website editing, your note at the end lauds "the incomparably talened Dolly Nickel". What does talened mean?

3) I love the picture on your home page. Can we see more of you?

Comments: Well that's cool. Too bad about peeps not showing up to the book signing. I think they're crazy, personally. Almost finished with THAT'S NOT MY NAME and I think it is tremendous. You not only succeeded in keeping the tension-suspense going, but you have made me sympathetic to virtually all the characters. Amazing that, cause usually the author chooses ones to target for 'badness'. That one thing definitely seperates it from most suspense novels.

But explain something for me, please. What's Flow-Spar? It sounds cool and it seems like you enjoyed it, but as an old boring Tae Kwon Do guy, I have no idea about this stuff.

Comments: The book signing was fun, and it was great to see friend and evil cohort Jay Bonansinga. Unfortunately, between winter and the stock market falling on its head there weren't a whole lot of people, folks just aren't buying as much so yet another fabulous independent bookstore, Stars Our Destination, is struggling. They have a great mail order business though, and LOTS of new and old stuff. So if you're looking for something check out their site or email them and ask if they have it. Like all indy booksellers, they can use the business to stay afloat under the shadow of Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com

During Saturday's martial arts training, I was asked, along with 5 other fellow martial arts students, to assist in a Kali training seminar on Sunday at another school, USA Karate. We had a great time introducing Kali to a class of mostly beginners, and I ended up working mainly with the kids. They're a great challenge -- fidgety and talkative and with attention spans about as long as grasshoppers. ::grin:: At the end of the seminar, one student asked Mr. Degerberg if his students could give a demonstration so they could "see this stuff as it's supposed to look." The six assistants paired off and we did a high energy, full strike flow-spar demonstration. My partner was Steve Garrado, who's also in the Marine Reserves, and he really kept me on my toes with his strength and speed... but I still gave as good as I got. All in all, we had a fabulous time.

Comments: So, Yvonne.

Give us the skinny on your weekend. I hear that not only did you have a book signing, but you were part of some kind of martial arts demonstration. Many of us have no life...we need you to make us happy. So give.

Please...

Comments: Andy -- Thanks so much! I'm glad to be able to keep the board. I like the format a lot better than other ones that I've looked at, plus I have that whole loyalty "this is the board I've always had" thing going. :)

Simon... aw shucks. I guess all I can say is Welcome to my World (hee hee). If you read any of my work, please let me know what you think!
