This was just before it closed. I think I fell in love with movie palaces then. I learned, later on, that my grandfather was on the building crew for another of Atlanta's old palaces, the Roxy Theater. He loved that old gem and was heart-broken when it fell to the wrecking ball in the early 1970's. Sadly, the Loew's Grand, on the brink of be saved, succumbed to a "mysterious" fire that sealed its fate. Atlanta lost so much of its movie history during the 60's and 70's. The "fabulous" Fox is all that remains. 29 Thu May 25 2006 - 18:51:23 Your name: Vincent Crivello Your e-mail address: vcrivello@aol.com Where do you live? I believe it was on South Vincennes Av. The interesting thing was when you entered the auditorium after your stop at the candy counter you were astounded to see everyone looking at you as you walked thru the door, The screen was behind the candy counter and you walked up the aisle then turned around to sit down and see the show. Also wondering if anyone knows the origin of the strange name, some thought it meant ear and had something to do with talking pictures however it was E.A.R. and might have been the owners initials. Can someone solve this over sixty year old mystery for me? Thanks for your help Vince .... Our August 17, 2005 Gala led to an invitation to do a TV program on Mae West for The Biography Channel. [We did a Mae West TV show and it was broadcast on A&E.] This August 2006 we will have an exhibition during the month of AUGUST in midtown Manhattan of several NYC theatres [many of these NYC buildings have been demolished] where Mae West and Texas Guinan appeared during the Jazz Era. We are missing a couple of photos, for example, of Daly's 63rd Street Theatre where Mae West's play was raided on February 9, 1927. How can we obtain a photo for our exhibition? Thank you. Are you a THS member?: (null) PLEASE SHARE YOUR MEMORIES AND STORIES:: Hello There I would like to express my interest in your site and inform you that I will be re-opening the historic Washington Theatre, located in Washington, N.J. of Warren County. I grew up seeing pictures here in the 80's and fell in love with the old building from 1926. It was a great vaudeville house and had a lot of great people working for it back in the day. Originally designed by architect, James Lyons, of Morristown. The theatre opened on Jan 24, 1927 by film pioneer, John Howell and his wife Clara,of Dover. They traveled by horse and carriage in the late 1800s,with a kinetoscope and showed the filmsthey purhased on walls inside town buildings. With a little luck, I will be restoring "The Washington" back to its original style and grandeur, as it remains a twin for the time being. The movie house, closed for over 40 years, will be renovated to be a performing arts center and will offer occasional classic films. The City of Winter Garden purchased the building and has turned it over to the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation for rehabing. In its heyday, the Garden had a Spanish garden interior, complete with "Romeo and Juliet" balconies, atmospheric lighting and a twinkling star ceiling. Originally seating over 600, the restored theatre will have space for about 300 patrons, and will include extensive stage facilities. The original decor will be duplicated as much as possible. It is expected to reopen in late 2006. 34 Thu October 06 2005 - 09:23:16 Your name: S. Baker Your e-mail address: act@apollo-theatre.org Where do you live? (City and State or Country): Martinsburg, West Virginia Are you a THS member?: (null) PLEASE SHARE YOUR MEMORIES AND STORIES:: We had two very pleasant guests today from your area who talked about this Society......The Apollo was built in 1913 - was scheduled to be destroyed in the early 1970's - a handful of individuals stepped up to save "the last one" and here we are today! I understand that in years past this town had four theatres - one burned down, two demolished and the Apollo. In recent past years there have been several historical documentaries filmed at the Apollo - I always say that Abe Lincoln was slain much more in the Apollo than anywhere else! They did filming for the movie - "Gods and Generals" in this Theatre - that was an interesting experience. And then there are the ghost stories......we have fun with those tales. We have a long way to go to assure the posterity of the Apollo - it was in a deteriorated state when "saved" - and much has been refurbished but, again, a long way to go to become ADA compliant, etc. It is refreshing to hear the exclamations of "Oh, its beautiful" when guests enter into the greater theatre - appearance on the outside does not reflect the charm of the inside. Just wanted to touch base and give hope to others who are attempting to do what has happened at the Apollo - maybe we can share what works and what does not. 35 Tue October 04 2005 - 17:36:31 Your name: Tyear Your e-mail address: pastortyear@sbcglobal.net Where do you live? (City and State or Country): Des Plaines, IL Are you a THS member?: (null) PLEASE SHARE YOUR MEMORIES AND STORIES:: Hello, recently I visited your headquarters next to the York theatre in downtown Elmhurst. I am writing to say that I am personally volunteering to save my downtown movie theatre in Des Plaines. The theatre was orginially opened in 1926, and for nearly seven decades, showed first run films. However, as of 2000, the theatre has been bought out by private owners whom now show Bollywood films only. Since the owners profit has not been successful, the city would like to tear it down in place of a bank. There was a campaign as of last year to save the theatre, but it seems that these words are nothing but air to our town committee. With the Theatre Historical Society of America, I would personally be glad to be the frontrunner to save the Des Plaines Theatre. The theatre itself, still needs almost 4.5 million dollars in restoration fees. I am willingly to sacriface my talents and services to anything I can to save this lasting theatre. Sincerely, Ross Reeder 1 2
