He attended Pangbourne Navel College, then(?), notr sure in which order, he jioned the Afred Holt Line as 'Deck Officer'(?), and also undertook RN Reserve Midshiopman training on King George V 21st May 1923. He then went on to HMS Waker 1st Flotilla 21st Aug to 20th Nov 1923. I have his Certificate Book which shows he had Appiontment number 2519 and qualification confriemed on 10th January 1924. I then assume he went on 'Reserve List' and joined 'Holt Line'. Understand he was on a freighter(?) at mooring off 'Asian Port', Japan or China, and the 'sling holding frieght'broke and he plus another knocked overboard and landed on metal barge 40-50ft below! Resulted in multiple fractures legs and wrist. Following a stint in local Hospital he was shipped back for R&R. As family in East Africa he was allowed to do R&R there (Kenya region). "Not a good idea"! While trying to get fit he was 'way out on plantation' when what was described to me as "Fan Belt" broke and while he was fixing it, local tried to kick it engine over! Not best idea! My Fathert lost his right arm, from elbow! I have 'Not' been able to get the 'Factural Information' regarding both "Accidents"? What I have given is the information I was able to gleen a little at a time, never good subject to discuss over dinner. Obviously he didn't go back to sea. He eventually got back to UK, learnt how to drive, write and 'drink' with left hand. I was surprise, 14yrs after brother, he clipped me around ear for asking the obvious 'Questions'! Probably what had happened to him! Okay, it would be good if somewhere there could some record to verify at least the Alfred Holt part of the tale? In fact now being in Oz 43 yeras and in my later years, not well and forced retirement, I have been doing some research on family. I was at 15yrs a RN Ganges boy, and at 18-20yrs on HMS Protector in Antartcic rank, 'Bunting Tosser', Signalman one of two. Now finding my 'direct ancestors', Admirals/Generals ++! Could be the reason for 'clips around the ears', some questions should not be asked! I just need to have answers for my Son's and Grand Children. During the war, he was captured by the Japanese on the Indian Ocean while returning from leave on the ship, Behar. After recouperating in NZ he decided to make it his home.
