Comments: Me? I'm on a Bram Stoker/Teri Jacobs combination binge. One's a collection of stories by Stoker with tales you guys never heard of besides these two obvious classics: Judge's House and The Squaw. And the other one's a second novel by the lady who gave us The Void from Leisure several years ago. It's called "Secrets Of the Bones". And I'd say it's a pretty damn heavy acid reading since "Duet For The Devil". Bones concerns itself with a fallen angels namely the Gregori. And some guy's trying to possess the woman who not only lost her infant but her viginity to the Gregori and got pregnated. Whoops. Now she's in trouble. The charactor/protagonist that is. Not the writer. ;)

Comments: Thanks, guys. I hope you will one day see it as a book. In the meantime, here's the next bit of action, hot off the keys.

* * *

An Outlaw with a shaved head used a hunting knife to cut Val free of her duct tape bonds. She squirmed as he peeled strips of tape from her clothes. "Don't gimme no shit or I'll cut your nose off," he warned her. "Now stand up. We're going to the fuck shack."

"Naw, man, we gangbang her right here in the dirt," said a guy wearing chains over his shoulders. "She don't get no special treatment."

"Wait your fucking turn, Link," Skinhead said. "I'm taking the bitch to the shack. Unless you think you can stop me."

Link shook his head and gave Skinhead his back.

I turned my head to watch Skinhead hustle Val toward the shack, but Snake's dirty boots suddenly blocked my line of sight and he bent down and stuffed the lips of a bottle into my mouth and forced me to swallow some foul-tasting liquid. Whatever it was, it tasted better than Snake's piss. "This shit'll blow your mind out your asshole. Things are gonna get real intense now."

"Lookit this shit," said Bongo Blue, who had somehow replaced Snake. Then he kicked me a solid shot in the ribs with his boot. The duct tape didn't pad the blow at all.

I gritted my teeth and managed to say, "How they hanging, Elwood?" If I'd been thinking clearly, I wouldn't have let on that I knew Bongo's real name, but clear thinking wasn't in the cards for the moment. The deck was stacked and the dealer was crooked, and I was pretty sure I was holding a dead man's hand.

Elwood kicked me again. Then took a knee and leaned his face close to mine. "You think you know me, tough guy? You don"t know shit." His breath stank of beer, cigarettes and rotten teeth.

I had a cutting comeback on the tip of my tongue but then I saw the machete in his hand and I kept my tongue glued to the roof of my mouth. Actually I saw two machetes but one of them wasn't really there. My double vision gave everything a ghost, like those ghost images on a TV screen when the antenna isn't positioned properly to catch the signal. You can tell which is real and which is the ghost but it's still disorienting.

Elwood showed me his front teeth and reminded me that I'd broken one of them when I shoved the gun in his mouth.

"Just doing what they paid me to do," I said, though I knew that wouldn't fly with this guy. There was no forgive and forget in the punk. He was hardcore. Smalltime, maybe, but hardcore just the same. The fact that he was here with the Outlaws meant that he'd most probably been in on the murder of the Chesterfields. Val and I wouldn't be leaving here alive, short of some kind of miracle.

"Nobody's gonna pay me to do what I'm gonna do to you," he said, grinning.

I shrugged inside my duct-tape cocoon. I was feeling oddly detached from my dire situation. I wondered if I was already feeling the effects of whatever Snake poured down my gullet.

I wondered if Gina Chesterfield would share our fate. She was nowhere in sight. Had they wrapped her in duct tape too? I glanced at the van but the windows were so dirty I couldn't tell if she was in the passenger seat. Maybe Bongo had convinced her that he'd had nothing to do with killing her parents. Or maybe she would be pretending to believe it until she could get away from Bongo and the biker barbarians.

I wondered what was happening to Val in the fuck shack. I knew what Skinhead intended to happen, but I knew Valentine Cooper well enough to know that she wouldn't submit without a valiant fight. Skinhead didn't know of her martial arts skills. I wondered if I should get my hopes up. I even wondered if Val might get away unscathed.

Then I wondered why I was doing so much wondering when the sky was starting to writhe with wraith-like clouds and the treetops were so alive with sharp-edged leaves and the tall kudzu-covered shapes were looking more and more like leafy beasts from a child's nightmare. Then I looked at the two of Bongo Blue and saw right into his depraved little heart. He was a soulless creature with a furtive rat-face. He might've been handsome at one time but his evil nature had transformed his features into something monstrous and hideously primitive.

"Dude's tripping now," said Snake, who reappeared out of nowhere. "Purple haze, motherfucker."

Every strand of muscle in my body was tightening up and putting a the squeeze on me, especially the muscles of my neck and shoulders. I was a lowly prehistoric wormlike creature, dreadfully wounded, destined to be an evolutionary dead-end. My muscles were coiling tighter and tighter, and all I wanted to do was crawl away from these big monsters standing over me but I couldn't move because I was wrapped too tight in gummy bindings.

"Cut him loose," somebody said. "Let's have some fun with this little piss ant."

"This is gonna be a motherfucker of a bad trip, man," Bongo said as he used the machete to slice the duct tape.

"Go get his bitch," said Snake. "I want him to watch while we fuck her to death in the dirt."

Comments: Here's part of a scene I just wrote for my detective novel TIGHT SQUEEZE. It's set in 1969 Atlanta. Joe Dall and Valentine Cooper have been abducted by bikers of the notorious Outlaws gang and are bound in duct tape.Joe has received a brutal beating, including several kicks to the head.

* * *

I woke up dead. I was floating near the ceiling of the rumbling van. I saw myself wrapped up like a silver burrito down below. Val too. Burritoed. Was that a word? Didn't matter. No vocabulary tests in the land of the dead.

There was a sudden flood of gray light and I thought I should probably go toward it but I could do nothing but hang around and watch as a bunch of grungy-looking guys unloaded us and dropped us on the ground. I drifted out of the van like a tagalong wraith and hovered above my body.

Val was giving them what-for with flourishes of admirable invective but the bikers didn't seem to be all that impressed and went about their business. There were six of them now. They passed a bottle of booze, just a bunch of greasy good old boys having a good old time. Their unmanned motorcycles stood at parade-rest at the edge of the clearing which was surrounded by kudzu vines gone wild. In the center of the clearing stood a little shack of weathered wood.

"Wake up, cocksucker, you ain't dead yet." That was my old pal Snake addressing my corpse. I wanted to say, Joke's on you, shit-head. I'm dead but not yet gone. But of course, I couldn't talk because I was floating up here in the ether and my body was down there in the dirt.

Then Snake did something outrageous even for a slob like him. He unzipped his dirty jeans, flipped out his dick and urinated in my face. I sputtered and gagged and realized with a sour shock that I was back in my body, on the receiving end of Snake's stinking piss.

So I wasn't dead after all. That was bad news for Snake. He didn't know it yet, but he was going to live just long enough to regret bringing me back to life.

Comments: How's the rest of Broken Saints fare so far, Randy? Well, I haven't gotten around to the anime series Read Or Die tv series. The first R.O.D. movie series was very good. You'd like this girl who's got books stacked everywhere in her apartment. She loves to read voraciously. Plus, she uses origami of paper as tools for whatever purpose she wanted, like a parachute or a paper airplane to fly in. It's very good. Very imaginative.

Comments: I just finished a long crime story called "Valentine's Shadow." Valentine "Val" Cooper is my detective Joe Dall's partner. In this tale, she's on the case alone when she finds that she's being followed by a nun. The nun says she's being dogged by a demon. I'll probably send this one to Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine. I've never sent them anything before. If I can sell this one, I may do a series of Val Cooper stories, all similarly titled "Valentine's ____________ (fill in the blank).

Comments: Now that I've watched the first disc of BROKEN SAINTS, I'm not sure I want to see the rest of it. It isn't bad, it's just very slow, and the mystical/spiritual dialogue gets awfully ponderous and heavy-handed. If you're curious, Dark, rent the first disc and then you'll see if it's your cup of tea. I don't recommend buying the whole thing, because you might not care for it that much.

Comments: I watched THE RETURN and enjoyed it. Not a landmark horror movie by any means, but one of Sarah Michelle Gellar's best film roles. I loved her in this. I would like to see her in a "serious" dramatic role. I think she would be good. Dig the dark hair too.

Comments: I did see The Return. It's a pretty good ghost story for Michelle Gellar. It may seem like a Lifetime Channel meets Ghost Hunters but it still had some weird suspense moments that kept the interest going until the end. And BTW, got myself a copy of Bram Stoker's Dracula's Guest & Other Weird Stories. The Lair Of The White Worm was included in the collection. I just wished they'd just added more stories Stoker wrote. They should have also added to the five novels for Barne's & Noble, The Man. Ah well, can't have everything.
