Comments: I just watched three films last night. All of them are good: DEAD BIRDS, VENOM, and HAUNTED HIGHWAY. Dead Birds is definitely a damned good horror/western. There should be more of that besides RAVENOUS, GINGER SNAPS BACK, THE BEGUILED, and several other titles I forgot but loved it. However, I'm mixed on GRIM PRAIRIE TALES though.

Comments: Yep, I saw it when it first came out on disc. I thought it was very good but I'd heard such wonderful things before hand that I was a tad let down. Still a fine fantasy, though.

Comments: Just read the booklet called "Gentleman From Angell Street" by Muriel and C.M. Eddy Jr.. An interesting take on H.P. Lovecraft. C.M. Eddy is not only his friend but a collaborator with several short stories like "Ashes", "Ghost Eater", "Blind Deaf and Dumb", and "The Loved Dead". Anyhow, I just started reading Exit To Eternity by C.M. Eddy Jr.. It's pretty good so far. To be sure, I'm still reading Ghost Stories Of Edith Wharton. Oh & BTW, I just watched a couple of good horror films, one's psychological and the other's supernatural. The Spanish film's called 13 Curses aka "And the Bell Chimes 13". It's a pretty good psychological horror film where the son of a dead sculptor came home to find a ghost of his Dad telling him to finish the sculpting project. The son did so reluctantly and madness ensues. The other one's a supernatural tale called "Shallow Ground". The film opens with a blood smeared teenage kid showing up at the Sheriff's office just as the Sheriff and his deputies were packing up to leave. Then supernatural manifestations started to happen. Not gonna tell you what they are. Check it out. Same with the first one I mentioned.

Comments: I'm reading a couple of classics: UNCLE SILAS BY Sheridan le Fanu and THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD by Charles Dickens (he died before he finished writing it so the mystery is never solved. Dan Simmons's upcoming novel will be about Dickens and this mystery.

Comments: I'm reading Edith Wharton's ghost stories right now. They are quiet terrors with ghost dogs, vengeful specters, dopplegangers, and Miss Mary Pask. This latter one you ought to read and roll your eyes in exasperation and calling that character a wuss. That's how I reacted after reading "Miss Mary Pask". I'm sure The Ghost Stories Of Edith Wharton is still in print. You might want to check it in Amazon.

Comments: I thought BROTHER ODD was better than the the Odd Thomas book that came before it. Koontz often seems to pad his stories to make them novel-length. THE ROAD is bleak--and beautiful in its own way.

Comments: Hey Randy - what did you think of BROTHER ODD? I wound up skipping whole paragraphs as he gets pretty long winded. BROTHER ODD would have made a better novella than a novel -- tons of stuff could have been cut out to make it a better book (IMHO). I'm currently reading Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD. Very bleak and you know I don't do bleak very well....

Comments: I enjoyed the ghosts stories in SHADES OF DARKNESS, especially the Edith Wharton tales. I suppose you could call this a collection of quiet horror--things don't bump in the night so much as they creak and creep, leaving you with a melancholy chill.

Comments: Old BBC stuff huh? How old are we talkin' here? In the eighties or further than that? Last time I recalled some ghost stories adapted for BBC and PBS Mystery! hosted by Vincent Price. I was kinda disappointed with the productions. But I wondered if that's the one you're talking about.

Comments: I might have to track that one down--and hope that I can find time to read it with this giant TBR pile looming over me like Godzilla. I just discovered that an old BBC production of classic ghost stories is available on DVD. It's called SHADES OF DARKNESS and features several adaptations of Edith Wharton tales. I've ordered it from Blockbuster online.
