After boot camp in SDNTC, I was assigned to the USS Pheobe. I trained on the USS Pheobe until I tested into A-School for Radioman in GLNTC at Great Lakes, IL area. Then,after I arrived at GLNTC they "re-assigned" me to the Radarman School ( under protest ). I graduated #2 in RD class, so I choose orders back to Long Beach NS to serve on the USS Long Beach CGN-9 for the remainder of my enlistment. Served in Vietnam on USS Long Beach CGN-9 as NTDS ATC operator in the OPS Div...NAVCOM and NAVY RED...12 hr shifts every day. I went from the smallest ship in WESPAC to the largest NUC Cruiser in the world! There was a lot of memories there.... Looking for any information that verifies our ship was in Vietnam and that we made incursions up rivers and deltas. We went up river and operated near Cantho for over a week doing minehunting search testing for swimmers in the river, I was put ashore in Cam Ran bay at a remote outpost to repair their comm and radar systems and the ship did muultiple gunfire support/SAR searches/port calls with no records in D.C.
