Indeed, Joel writes very well.

Were I writing THE STRANGERS today, there are many things I would do differently, but it's a pretty decent book, I think, and one that many people call my most frightening.

New author preferred edition coming from OVERLOOK CONNECTION/INFINITY -- and I'm pleased to say movie interest is fairly serious.

Even more pleased about Stokers, proof that overnight success requires only 30--35 years or so.

Thanks again for writing.

Best,

Mort

Comments: Hi Mort, Congratulations on your numerous appearances on the Stoker ballot. Irrefutable proof that one gets better with practice, I take it. Good luck the rest of the way.

Thanks, Scott:

For those who don't know, I've made the final ballot/become a Bram Stoker award nominee in three categories this year: short story, fiction collection, and alternative form.

& whether you know or not, I've been writing a long time, with my first novel published in 67 or 68.

Truth: I think I have been writing well since 1985 or so, when I really discovered, thanks to a number of artists, that it was not wrong for me to think of myself as an artist, too.

This does not mean that those who bestow awards were in agreement back then.

That there seems to be some interest in my work is gratifying as is the work itself.

& when I counsel patience, patience, to those fine young artists I work with in a number of high schools and colleges, I know whereof I speak, methinks:

Old Tolstory has it, you know: "God Sess the Truth, but Waits."

& now congrats back to you--your worthy and promising RED CHURCH is gettign attention it merits.

Best,

Mort

Thanks for sharing, but this is not Lunatics Anonymous. Down the street and tell the nice people your name, then sit down and wait for your medication to arrive.

Yeah, I know I'm supposed to be tolerant and it's always wrong to respond to stuff like this-- But Harlan has it right. Sometimes you roll up the newspaper and smack away because it feels good.

Nah, Like me, it's too clumsy and heavy; unlike me, the mandolin is small and graceful, so that will likely be with me.

And as one of the six secret masters of "Delta Slide Mandolin," whoo! I can safely say, "If you haven't heard Mort's mando blues, you haven't heard Mort's mando blues."

Best,

Mort

Friend Shannon always reminds me of the special privilege and pleasure it is to have someone read your work well; he validates my aiming for more than the proverbial "good read" or "beach book."

I'm not displeased with NATIONS; I'd thought it would be "pretty good," but it came out some better than that, methinks.

And I think it worthy of its being dedicated to the late Dr. Morton Einhorn, a man of great intellect, and probably the first guy to convince the very young Mort Castle, "why, hell yes, you can do stuff!"

Now, everyone rush out and buy the book. Or stay home and order it from Prime Books, Matt Schwartz's shocklines, or...

Of course I'm Mort, Dimitris. I'm "Mort" to everyone except some 3rd grade kids who can't handle calling an adult (old guy) by his first name.

Except in aa few moments, I think there might be other things I'm likely to be called by Mr. Piddle.

Ain't forgot you, pal, and am most glad to have you as Unofficial President of the Castle Fan Club and Precision Sheepherding Society of Greece.

Have some stuff in the mail to you.

Thanks, skinny (ah my being skinny is more and more a fond memory as the Great Shift Proceeds with Age)

That story is one of my favorites; it's been re-ranked by the good folks at elaleph/Galaxia Cthulhu who've voted it the #4 Best Terror Tale of All Time, in the first five with Mssrs. Poe, Lovecraft, and Barker--ain't displeased.

Some talk of this flying as TV or movie, but I've had lots of that talk over the years.

Comments: Hi Mort. I was just wondering if you could tell me a little bit more about the writing workshops you'll be giving at this year's WHC. Thanks.

Well, it's more about learning some prime rules of writing--and throwing away much of the stuff you've learned that gets in the way of your writing.

I'd probably use the term "empowerment," but that's a bullshit pop psych word and I have little use for bumper sticker platitudes to guide us through Life and Art.

It's about authenticity, okay? Getting some time in with that person in your mirror and finding out what he wants to write about...

and then finding out how to get out of his way so he can.

Best,

Mort
