ppowers798@sbcglobal.net Comments: Mort, after recently reading Arthur Miller write about Marilyn Monroe in his autobiography, TIMEBENDS: A LIFE, I can verify-- with even more certainty now--that your story, "I Am Your Need," not only FULLY, but ASTOUNDINGLY captures the real Marilyn's clear-cut angst and "demonic" terrors. In fact, when I was reading the autobio. part about Marilyn in, Miller's book, I thought for sure, she simply must, then, try and kill herself, eventually, the way she was, and I thought how ridiculous the conspiracy "therorists" (conspiracy fantacists) are in trying to conjure up anything other than the scenario that she was extremely self-destructive and probably found a way, then, to eventually end her pain and her life.
"I Am Your Need" captures-- very powerfully, I preceive the vast quintessence of tragedy there--what it must have been like for her--internally. The indominable BLACKNESS, she faced. It's only recently, though, since I didn't quite know enough about Ms. Monroe, that I've been able to check this powerful piece of yours against a very vivid depiction about her by the other great writer mentioned here, Arthur Miller. I'll definitely revisit "I Am Your Need," again and again.

ppowers798@sbcglobal.net Comments: Mort, I'll *never, *EVER* be able to thank you enough for showing my story to Jerry Williamson, for recognizing that piece for what it was, and thereby getting me into MASQUES V. It's made me finally realize in a more fully awake state, come to joyful terms with, the *real* WRITER I am, despite any rejections the magazines may continue to divvy me back--they doing it, all like a soul-numbing, industrial food-processing machine, and, also, perhaps like certain churches I know where in their cases, cloning is the key to success. But, MASQUES V, stands for itself; it's its own Stoker, Horror Guild, or World Fantasy Award--although, of course, it wouldn't be bad if MASQUES V got one of those awards, too.
You're one of my true friends--and, you see what's really wailing about on my inside and how this all finally works out on the written page.
I've got to buy you lunch again, sometime.

Re: forthcoming and in the works--short story in POE'S LIGHTHOUSE anth, edited by Chris Conlon; comics bio of Sabatin in GRAPHICS CLASSICS PRESENTS SABATINI (just released); short story in MASQUES V, edited by the late Jerry Williamson with Gary Braunbeck; pushing, of course, to do what I can to see that the film happens--and then, well, I'm sort of floating, figuring what wants to happen.
I have certainly hit a time in my life when I don't try to put 'em out there once a week--quality doesn't happen that way for me.
And sadly, there does seem to be a crud glut out there these days (put down three highly touted 'horror novels' I bought recently because life is too short to waste hours on dreck), though to be sure there are some fine new and emerging writers.
So, there are some possible novels, possible novellas, possible short stories in the works. Not sure just yet.
But knowing there are readers like you saying "Yes" to what I'm putting down is certainly added motivation.

Just wanted to let you know that your short work, particularly the stories collected in "Moon On the Water," represent--to me, at least--a genuine touchstone in the literature of the dark and the fantastic. I've passed that book around to many, many friends, and they all think you're a treasure. That collection is one that, along with Ellison's "Deathbird Stories," John Shirley's "Black Butterflies," and Kelly Link's "Magic For Beginners," I find myself drawn back to again and again. Do you have anything new in the works? Now that horror fiction has crawled out of the cellar it was in for much of the past decade, there seems to be so much bad writing in the genre (which was the reason it ended up in the cellar in the first place), I don't think I could stand the thought that Mort Castle wasn't out there puttin' everybody on notice with more perfectly polished little gems of storytelling brilliance. And that being said, why the hell doesn't your message board get more activity? I visit Horror World's author message boards from time to time to see what's up in the field, and every hack in the business gets postings almost daily, but real talents like you and Beth Massie get the digital equivalent of tumbleweeds and wind through the trees. Wrong, I say! People with taste unite! Tell Mort how freakin' much we repect the man!

THE STRANGERS SCREENPLAY OPTIONED BY WHITEWATER FILMS
The Strangers, a screenplay by Tim O'Rawe adapted from Mort Castle's 1984 novel of the same name, has been optioned by Jeff Balis of Whitewater Films. Founded three years ago by Rick Rosenthal, Whitewater Films has established a reputation for quality with its award winning release Mean Creek and the critically acclaimed Nearing Grace. Jeff Balis's strong indie producing skills were honed during his two season stint on HBO's Project Greenlight.
The Strangers presents Michael Louden, who is, in Castle's words, "your ever-so-average nice guy, your neighbor, your friend--except he wants to kill you and your family and your dog. It's the story of the next door serial psycho, a Jack the Ripper in Willy Loman's well shined shoes--and there are thousands more just like him, waiting their time to kill."
The novel was heralded as "one great scary book" (The Star, Chicago Publishing Group/Hollinger Newspapers), upon its initial release, but Castle maintains that the story is even more suited to our terror-times. Screenwriter Tim O'Rawe adhered closely to the novel in his adaptation while adding his cinematic touches.
The Strangers, with an introduction by Marc Paoletti, has been reprinted as a trade paperback, a signed, limited hardcover (edition limited to 150), and a signed and lettered edition (of 26) by Overlook Connection Press (www.overlookconnection.com).

Glad you were disturbed. Story is meant to rattle people--perhaps as much as some of the reported stories we get about what people/parents do to their kids.

You are one of our finest crafters of short fiction both in or out of genre. I heard a rumor that a couple of your novels are going to be re-released soon. Thanks, Clay. Truthfully, NATIONS proved to be much more of a book than I'd hoped it would be...
Am, however, puzzled as heck by its getting so little ink/notice, despite its Stoker nom.
Some delays in publishing the reprint versions of CURSED BE and STRANGERS; Overlook Connection Press will be doing 'em both and should have had them out by now, but, whoo! Change of printers for OVERLOOK and other hassles. Because this is Dave Hinchberger doing the publishing, we will be looking at quality jobs, Covers by Erik Wilson are great.
Advance orders are being taken at shocklines.com--and Shocklines proprietor Matt Schwartz has been a booster of horror since he stole his cousin's plastic model CREATURE FROM THE GOOEY LAGOON (by Aurora clone company, Luhara).

Yeah, I was aware of it with other industries, particularly specialty soap manufacturing and urban sheep ranching, but hadn't heard that to be the case with Hollywood. You figure that's why all the stuff gets filmed in Canada?
