(Cha) Mc Manus was a pilot in 101 squadron and flew LM370, SR-K2 on a Berlin mission which was shot down on 18th November 1943 over Oud Schoonebeek on the Dutch/German border. It was carrying the ABC jamming device. I have been researching details of the flight and the other crew members - Guy Spyers, Barry Petyt, Kenneth Jones, Anthony Rosen, Charles Downs, George Gittins, George Herman. His Operational Tour was from 6 May 1944 until 3 September 1944. He was part of 625 Squadron flying from Kelstern Lincolnshire. He was one of the lucky ones who survived 33 sorties. I have his Log book and a map marking the sites they were sent to. Some years ago my wife had this map framed for me and it now hangs proudly above the fireplace in our lounge. My father W/O William (Bill) Dane was part of Bomber Harris's 50 Lancaster Squadron Attached RAF-RAAF based at Skellingthorpe. My dad flew 13 missions as a Wireless Operator in the Lancaster 'G' for George and was very lucky to survive the war and return home to Australia. I have a large photo of 50 squadron on my wall which I cherish as well as my dad's Uniform and his flight/mission diary. One of over 55 000 who gave their lives was my Uncle Bob. He was a volunteer in the RAAF and transferred to England to serve with the RAF. He flew his first and last mission out of RAF Witchford, over Germany in September 1943. He was 24 years old and left behind a young widow. I think they had been married under 2 years. This memorial means a lot to his surviving and now elderly younger brother and sister, and I know my father would have very much wanted to have made a formal recognition of his brother's death. Fortunately a cousin was able to bring back to Australia a photo of Bob's headstone in a Commonwealth War Cemetery for his brothers and sister to see, and this really meant a lot to them. I will be in London this year with my sons aged 12 and 16 in September and we will visit the memorial to pay our respects.
