Comments: Hi All:

Just out from Ash-Tree press is THE SHADOW ON THE BLIND by Louisa Baldwin edited by myself and Richard Dalby. This is an excellent collection of ghost stories by Rudyard Kipling's aunt that has been unobtainable for over 100 years. Richard found one other story which we included to make this a complete conpendium of all of Baldwin's supernatural tales.

The folks at Ash-Tree commisssioned the amazingly talented Allen Koszowski to draw a new cover based on the original and Allen came throough like a champ, it's a lovely production and a significant addition to any collection of Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories.

Chheers,

John

Comments: Whoops - forgot about THE DARK RETURNERS; thanks for the reminder. Well, good luck with the Brennan project, John, whichever way it ends up. Either way, you've got my vote of support...and my money.

Assuming you have ALL the Brennan, including SCREAM AT MIDNIGHT and THE DARK RETURNERS, you would still be amazed at what you DON'T have, (at least in a volume under Brennan's byline). He was fairly prolific the last few years of his life, placing nearly two-dozen stories in anthologies that remain uncollected. Then there's also the Weird-Menace/Lost Race/Western that Stefan discovered. Not a great piece of literature, but lots of fun and certainly not easy to come by.

My preference would be to do a comprehensive set of Brennan (like the Wellman volumes), but failing that, a volume of just uncollected or difficult stories would be a substantial book.

Cheers,

John

Comments: John, not to ask you to give away any secrets but to follow-up on the Brennan question: should these omnibus collections come to light, would they contain any unpublished stories? I have all his individual collections (sans much of his poetry), so am wondering if these would contain any stories I don't already have.

Brennan's Estate is currently in negotiations with two prominent editors one of whom has several "z's" in his name and one of whom has a messaage board on Horror World... More than that I can't say, other than to speculate that a Brennan omnibus sans Lucius Leffing stories would run to three fair-sized volumes...

Cheers,

John

Comments: John, another question for you (and thanks for the view on Quinn -- I'll give that 3-vol. set some serious consideration now): in the latest Cemetery Dance mag, your listing of Top 100 authors/works mentions Joseph Payne Brennan with the words "Watch For News". Care to shed some light on that exciting teaser for this Brennan fan? Is something new in the works?

Comments: Hi All:

Matt: Great seeing you at the con and I'm certainly looking forward to seeing your collection!

Riley: Quinn is most definitely not what I'd call flowery! In fact, his fast-paced de Grandin tales would usually serve as a counterpoint to Smith & Lovecraft. I don't think there are any of his stories on-line, but "The Phantom Farmhouse" has been anthologized a bunch and shhould be easy to locate.

DARK SANCTUARY by H.B. Gregory is at the printer and should by out mid-June. THE SCARECROW is being laid-out right now with our next two books THE RETURN OF THE SOUL by Robert Hichens and BEASTS OF BRAHM by Mark Hansom pretty close to ready to go to the designer. I need artwork for the Hansom and then we're off!

Comments: Hey John, the three-volume set of Seabury Quinn's stuff sounds very interesting. One little concern that I have is that I've always kinda lumped Quinn in -- for no real reason, really, since truth be told I'm not that familiar with his work -- with writers like Clark Ashton Smith and Lovecraft, with their flowery, effusive prose, than with the more (to me) easily accessible authors like Hugh Cave and Manly Wade Wellman. Can you give me your feedback on Quinn and, specifically, where you feel he might fit on the "flowery scale"? Also, do you know of any stories by him that are available to read on-line?

Comments: Greetings, John. I haven't posted to this board yet, so I thought to myself, "What better excuse than to offer yet another thanks for a great World Horror Convention?" The whole event was very well planned, in my humble opinion, and it was also a truckload of fun, as I had been led to expect from reports by past attendees. I had been feeling somewhat exhausted for several months -- mentally, physically, emotionally -- what with preparing to relocate with my family (which we did about three weeks ago), looking for a new job, finishing my student teaching, etc., but I came back from the con reinvigorated. Not surprisingly, I've got a shelf's worth of new books to read, including THE BLACK GONDOLIER, which is among the ones I'm most looking forward to.

It was a real treat to meet you and talk with you and Cathy. I only wish we'd had more time to hang out. Good luck planning next year's con; I look forward to seeing you there.

Best wishes,
Matt
