Comments: My apologies to all for seemingly ignoring this board the last week or so... The Morris and Finch collections are in the works, though there may be a slight reshuffling of our schedule to allow for the publication of a new collection from LUCY TAYLOR!

This is no way puts the fine books by Mark Morris and Paul Finch on the back-burner, it's just that contractually we may need to get Lucy's book out first due to a possible paperback sale.

Cheers,

John

Comments: In order to produce a collection of Campton' work, a publisher would almost have to split it with some other author who contributed a small amount of very fine work. For instance, I know of only a few works by David A. Riley:

"After Nightfall" in the Richard Davis edited YEAR'S BEST HORROR STORIES #1 and FANTASY TALES #15. "Prickly" in the Stuart David Schiff edited paperback anthology DEATH. "The Urn" in Whispers #1(magazine). "The Farmhouse" in the Gahan Wilson edited anthology FIRST WORLD FANTASY AWARDS. "Out of Corruption" in THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF ZOMBIES. "The Satyr's Head" in THE SATYR'S HEAD & OTHERS (anthology) and THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF TERROR. The Locus indices mention two other tales, "A Bottle of Spirits" and
"Writer's Cramp," which I have not seen.

Comments: Hello, John, et al:

I too would like to see David Campton's work collected, but I believe he has been more productive in writing plays than short stories.

"Goat," in Whispers #8 (magazine), WHISPERS (anthology)

"At the Bottom of the Garden," Whispers #9 (magazine), YEAR'S BEST HORROR STORIES #6, WHISPERS II (anthology), MAD SCIENTISTS (anthology), THE BEST OF WHISPERS (anthology)

"Alderman Stratton's Fancy," Whispers #13/14(magazine)

"Firstborn," WHISPERS III (anthology)

"Postumous Bequest," Whispers #17/18(magazine), YEAR'S BEST HORROR STORIES #11

"Repossession," WHISPERS VI (anthology), YEAR'S BEST HORROR STORIES #16

These are all excellent stories, but not enough to fill a volume. "At the Bottom of the Garden," for those who not be familiar with it, is a delightfully grotesque take on Davis Grubb's "Where the Woodbine Twineth" (a.k.a. "You Never Believe Me"). Does anyone know of any other tales?

Jim

Considering the on-going series from North Atlantic to collect ALL of Sturgeon's short fiction, any additional projects would seem kind of lightweight by comparison. The NA set is up to six volumes now and I've loved every one of 'em.

David Campton is an intersting suggestion, I remember reading "Goat" in WHISPSERS years ago and being quite impressed with it. I'm not sure if he even wrote enough fiction to fill a book, I got the impression that he started writing very late in life and may not have produced very much.

I can announnce that we've just finalized an agreement to publish the complete fiction of Bob Lemman, best known for "Window", "Loob", "The Tehama" and a number of other notable tales from F & SF.

Comments: I would love to see Theodore Sturgeon's Some of Your Blood collected with some of his short horror fiction such as "The Professor's Teddy Bear", "Shadow, Shadow on the Wall", "... and my fear is great." , "It" , "Bianca's Hands" , "Vengence Is" , "Bright Segment" and several other peices. I think it would make a very nice volume.

Also, I would love to see a collection of some of David Campton's short horror fiction ...

Take care,

Mike

Comments: Hi Riley:

Finney... Hmmm... CHARLES Finney would be good too...

I have to confess that I'd never considered Jack Finney for the simple reason that most of his work is AFAIK pretty accessible in one form or another. The 1983 collection can be found for $30 or less and then there's the twelve story collection in paperback. I haven't really compared the contents to see if there are some stories only available in his scare first collection...

On another note we have now come to an agreement with E.H. Visiak estate for an omnibus that will include the novel MEDUSA and several other pieces. We're also in discussion with an author of several very highly regarded tales that have never been collected in book form... I can't say anything more on the subject except to add that this would be the only Midnight House title to feature work by a living author!

Mysteriously,

John

Comments: John, regarding prospective projects: have you ever considered compiling and publishing all of Jack Finney's short stories into a COMPLETE STORIES OF JACK FINNEY volume(s)? Have you heard any rumours of other publishers looking into this? Sure seems like a natural -- and a guaranteed hot-seller -- to me.
