I came across a book last night, I think it was Children of Cthulhu, that mentioned it as a Lovecraftian novella. As a rabid Lovecraft fan the title caught my interest. Is there any relation to the Colour out of Space? 199 Wed June 12 2002 - 12:41:32 Fullname: John Pelan Email: jpelan@cnw.com Comments: Murphy asks if WHERE TERROR STALKED is a good Charles Birkin collection... In my opinion, there is no such thing as a bad Charles Birkin collection... He was the epitome of everything a great short story writer ought to be. That being said, this is a particularly interesting collection as it includes several pieces that were originally written thirty years earlier and had been revised for this book. Great stuff, "The Harlem Horror" is one of the most disturbing tales you're likely to run across. "Green Fingers" shows how easily average people can buy into evil as a matter of convenience... Pretty chilling when you reflect on it. If I'm ever half the writer that Charles Birkin was, I'll be pretty content... I was pretty disappointed - as you say, most of it is pretty ordinary, and most that is decent has appeared in print quite recently. There are some other early Australian writers who have produced decent supernatural stories, but who aren't in Bleiler's Checklist and haven't been anthologised to my knowledge - Ernest Favenc, Francis Faucett, Edward Gordon, Alex Beer. There's also a bloke named Benjamin Farjeon who I've never heard of, but check out these titles: Devlin the Barber (1888); A Strange Enchantment (1889); The Last Tenant (1893); Something Occurred (1893); The Mesmerists (1900); The Clairvoyants (1905). Sounds promising. Indeed they do... I can't pretend to be acquainted with any of any of the authors that you mention. If you'd like to e-mail me, I'd be most interested in further investigation. Even if there aren't enough tales to comprise a book, it appears that I've landed an on-going anthology series (which I can't discuss too much yet) that will allow me to collect a lot of work by authors that didn't have quite enough top-drawer stuff to fill a book. I just picked up a collection of Birkin's short stories called "Where Terror Stalked" with a psychadelic 60s cover and the words "Charles Birkin infects one with creeping fears!" on the cover in pink lettering. I'm interested in your opinion: is this a good Birkin collection? Cheers! 202 Sun May 26 2002 - 23:22:04 Fullname: JAD Email: Comments: I had an interest in Boothby (as a fellow Aussie!) for a while and browsed his short story collections for supernatural tales with the intention of writing an article about him for All Hallows. Why did you stop doing it? Fancy a biscuit? 1. I didn't, if you put a metal ashcan over your head and bang on it for a good hour or so, I'm sure you'll be able to hear the show... 2. arf Now that that's out of the way... Yes, JAD the Dr. Nikola is indeed the Boothby charcter... It's funny but James Lowder and I were just discussing the possibility of a Boothby collection. The sad fact is that there just isn't enough top-drawer supernatural material for an entire book. There is one non-Nikola novel that might merit reprinting, but other than that I've got Boothby's better tales targeted for an anthology series currently under discussion. The sad fact of the Nikola books is that while the central character is very interesting, the novels themselves just aren't all that good... They're well worth reading if you can pick 'em up cheap or get them at the library, but I wouldn't spend $100+ on first editions. Surely Boothby is very much an obscure, dated author these days. Are you thinking of re-issuing any of his books and/or stories? As you'd know he wrote the odd ghost/supernatural tale. 205 Sun May 12 2002 - 22:28:10 Fullname: John Pelan Email: jpelan@cnw.com Comments: Mel wrote: "Comments: Hi John, I had asked you about your Jack The Ripper story--Color Out Of Darkness in which you replyed that I should check out Bloodletting Press. Are we talking about 2 different novellas?? Can you please clear this up?? Thanks very much!!" Well, it's not really about Jack the Ripper, but Jack the Ripper's in it... It's not really Lovecraftian, but some folk might think it's a Mythos story (and I'd agree with them), it's not really about strange events in history or serial killings, but there's a good bit of that too... And there, you have it. ;-) John BTW: I'm hard at work on my bit for SHADOWS OVER BAKER STREET, which will explain "the remarkable worm said to be unknown to science", of course it's not really about the worm, but it does have the first documented meeting between Holmes and Dr. Nikola and also alludes to Fu Manchu. ;-) Cheers, John 206 Fri May 10 2002 - 16:49:30 Fullname: Mick Email: michael@micksims.f9.co.uk Comments: John, Many thanks for your excellent story for COLD TOUCH.
