Comments: OK. Everyone get settled down in a nice comfortable chair, throw a warm blanket around your shoulders, scrunch up your eyes and picture this: Lawrence Hilton Jacobs (Freddie Boom Boom Washington) as Leonard!! With all due respect to Mr. Jacobs - I think his asking rate may be reasonable. And the guy is really a solid actor. Think on this friends...could work...Put him and Jeff Bridges together...I think you have a Hap and Leonard sandwich.

Comments: It's a mini-review of HARD LOOKS: "The short stories of jack-of-all-harsh-trades Andrew Vachss (the Burke detective novels) get the noir treatment as a black-and-white-illustrated collection. The talents adapting Vachss' work are varied -- from cult Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale (the Hap Collins-Leonard Pine novels) to British artist Dave Gibbons (WATCHMEN) -- but all seem capable of delivering jarring sensory uppercuts."

Comments: Thought I ought to add that writers make deals with publishers for a certain amount of money and the content of a book, but we don't set the prices. Same with ebay books unless I'm selling something out of my private stock. My prices, which can be found at A Dale Barkman's Hap and Leonard website are as fair as I can make them. That's one reason I no longer sign ARC's or bound galleys. I'm even going to stop signing them for friends. In for a penny, in for a pound. People jack up the prices, I get nothing for those. If I'm going to sign them the exception from now on is I sell them to you. That way I make something and they aren't just grabbed or given to folks as favors who then jack up the prices, creating a limited for which, me, the author gets nothing, and the design of he limited is lost. Reviews. Bookstore people. An exception to this is if my publisher has a galley event. Pays money to have me be somewhere and sign galleys for librarians. This is real promotion, and therefore it serves it purpose. And yeah, in some rare instances I do sign them. But I get to choose.

Comments: Wayne, i'm sure Joe can handle the situation without Leonard. besides, if you don't question these writer types, who knows what kind of crap they'll try to get away with. i've enjoyed Joe's work for years, and everytime i've spoken with him he's always been open about whatever subject i might bring up. i would never have asked him about the extra 30000 words if i didn't think he wouldn't answer (what's the point?). as you can see, Joe did answer without a hint of malice. i actually did have a discussion with Joe about the prices on some of his books, particularly on ebay, and he showed genuine concern. like many of us, he grew up poor and knows the value of the dollar. thanks Joe. ..............g

Comments: Joe,
Just incase you've sent Leonard to kick some righteous butt, I want you to know that you're right and I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said, and that I've hidden my vanilla cookies.

Comments: None of the extra wordage is necessry, it's there for those who want to see how writers pare down the work, and believe me, a number of people loved that aspect because they are would be writers. In fact, many times it's been requested that I show what I cut. so I did. I don't do it with every book, but I wanted to give those who cared a bank for their buck. But, if that doesn't interest you, you got the intro, the afterward, and a different and beautiful cover. I've done comic scripts in collections, essays, all manner of things, experimenting in the same way I experiment with the writing. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I thought the book was fairly priced for a limited, and I want to make sure that it isn't just the same damn book with a signature page. Hope that answers some of the question.

Comments: Let me come to Joe's defense here since I offered some heavy criticism about the extra wordage in my review of the Subterranean Press edition of A Fine Dark Line. Joe has often stated that he has mixed feeling about the limited editions and the high prices that are charged for them. Most often a fan will pay $40 to $60.00 for a limited edition and the only thing extra he gets with it is the author's autograph. I think Joe attempted to add something extra to the book so that his fans wouldn't feel cheated by the high price. Personally, I didn't finish reading the extra 30,000 words. I would have if it had been Joe talking about the art of writing, or how he came about to write the novel and create the characters in it. I love it when he talks about his craft and life in general. I never find him boring. In fact, I wish he could've done something like that with this book, though he did write a short prologue and afterword. Other than that, my suggestion was to do away with the extra wordage and knock off $5.00 from the price, or add a slipcase to it.

Comments: Joe, i purchased Subterranean's FINE DARK LINE, and enjoyed it immensely. then recently i purchased the Mysterious Press trade edition for a friend's upcoming birthday. with several weeks before her birthday i decided to read the MP issue. i don't know, Joe, and it's not me to question, but were the 30000 extra words necessary?

Comments: My friend who suggested Tommy Lee Jones for Hap also suggested Delroy Lindo as Leonard. And I was wondering the other day about Michael Duncan Clarke. Although maybe he's a bit too big. I always think of Leonard as big not HUGE.

Comments: Everyone,
Go to "Hisownself's" website and see what Joe has to say about the Columbia Space Shuttle tragedy, plus check out the picture of him and the clay pot that's covering a piece of the shuttle. I heard that when the National Guard showed up, Hap was passing out Dr. Peppers to the folks and Leonard was hording the vanilla cookies. Hap couldn't get him to share!

Comments: I agree with everyone that thinks that Jeff Bridges would play a great Hap, he fits what I imagine everytime I read THe H&L. For Leonard, for some reason, I keep envisioning a bigger bulkier guy than Samual L. Jackson or Don Cheadle, both whom I love as actors. I always picture someone more like 'Bubba' from Forrest Gump as Leonard, but that's just my crazy imagination... -Minh
