Comments: I really keep the dictionary around, and that's about it. At last as far as handy goes. I do have a tehsarus and encyclopedias, I just don't keep them at hand. But I read a lot about history, sociology, anthropology, and literature. I'm actually more inspired by just reading and rereading good works. The subject dictates what I have at hand. Lots of books on Western history, the Great Depression, some political. I have very large non-fiction library, and use it when I feel the call. But one indespensible book at my finger tips. The dictionary. I also use the internet to look up things.

Comments: Hi Joe,

Long time fan of your work. Could I ask what books you keep on your shelf that you find invaluable as a writer? What atlas, dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopaedia, quotations, grammar books and any others you use regularly? My own shelf is a little light and needs to be expanded definitely.

Charles.

Comments: Agree, Wayne -- better for Joe to be sharpening his pencil and creating more great stuff than fretting over the nitty gritty of publishing/distribution. Funny...I've got that Poynter book as well -- albeit an older edition. By the way, I'm self-publishing my first novel (should be available in a few weeks) through iuniverse. I'll report back on my experience with them -- it's a print on demand system, and as I mentioned before, so far, so good...but enough about me. Joe -- when do you get around to the New York area next?

Comments: Jamie,
Joe's right about what a time-consuming process self-publishing is, especially the distribution part of it. I bought The Self-Publishing Manual by Dan Poynter last year and was blown away by how complex the distribution process actually is. It doesn't do much good to self-publish a book if you can't get it into the hands of a distributor, followed by the the bookstores, and then into the reader's hands. A person can certainly do it. Barry Hoffman has done it with the hardcover versions of his novels and the creation of Gauntlet Press. Also, James Redfield did it initially with his novel, The Celestine Prophecy, until Warner Books picked it up. Still, it's a long, stressful process that takes time away from writing. I don't know about you, but I'd rather have Joe turning out one or two books a year and leave the publishing process to someone else.

Comments: Gotcha -- I'm aware of and really appreciate Subterannean Press' selection -- I was just using Mysterious as an example. I guess I'm harping on the idea of self-publishing because it seems like something a writer with the kind of entrepeneurial spirit as Joe's might really do well in. On the other hand, clearly there's only so much the man can juggle at any given time. But...Joe's young -- there's plenty of time for all things :-) Take care, all.

Comments: Jamie,
Check out Subterannean Press for more of Joe's novels and anthologies. Mysterious Press doesn't publish all of his stuff.

Comments: That would be interesting...maybe they'd name a town after one of your characters (along the lines of Tarzana, CA)...J.R.Lansdale Inc., located in Popcornkingdia, TX... In any case, I'll be buying your wares any way you see fit to display them.

Comments: There was a point in time where I considered a Lansdale publishing enterprise, like E.R. Burroughs did. I have a strong base, and thought I could do it myself. But the idea of distribution, business by mail wore me down. And frankly, I'm just making too much money doing what I'm doing, and doing exactly what I want to do, even if it isn't always handled the way I would like.

Comments: Well, if you ever come out with something so outlandish that even Mysterious wouldn't want to touch -- your loyal readers would still want to get at the thing. Maybe at some point you might consider a subsidy publishing company...authors can get @ 40% of the cover price with setup charges that start as low as $160 bucks...I bet you could do quite nicely just selling to your following. Books get ISBNs and sell through major online distributors (Amazon, B&N, etc...)and the subidy house takes care of all the printing, shipping, billing, etc... Just a thought. I've been working on something myself and so far can report it's been a good experience. Just want to see the bucks going into the right pocket -- you deserve it.

Comments: I've noting against self-publishing, but I don't know much about it. I think too many books are self published that shouldn't be, but the same case might be made of mainstream publishing as well, I suppose. But a lot of good stuff happens too. I just don't have enough experience to know much about it, but could see me doing it at some point.

Comments: Wayne: Bottoms not in production, in consideration. We'll see. Mucho Mojo is in preproduction, and so is THE BIG BLOW. DEAD IN THE WEST is optioned. "The Pit" is optioned. But time will tell.
