Police: Man lived with mom's corpse for weeks Canadian Press May. 6, 2003 07:00 AM EDMONTON - An Edmonton man who is alleged to have lived with his mother's corpse for several weeks after her death turned himself in to police over the weekend. David Joseph Lafantaisie, 42, was charged with second-degree murder and offering an indignity to a body. Police charged Lafantaisie after the discovery of an elderly woman's body in a rental home in the city's northeast. Neighbors identified the woman as 71-year-old Grace Lafantaisie. Homicide Detective Albert Lacher said she had probably been dead for several weeks. An autopsy showed she had been suffocated. A neighbor who asked not to be identified said Lafantaisie told him he was an unemployed welder who had been injured in a fall from a roof he was repairing. When he asked Lafantaisie about Grace, whom he hadn't seen for a couple of weeks, the son told him she was in Ontario attending a funeral. The Lafantaisies had moved in two years ago after the family of Erika Nordby - the miracle baby who nearly froze to death after venturing outside in freezing temperatures - moved out. Erika, then 12 months old, made national headlines in February 2001 when she wandered out of the house in the wee hours. Her mother, Leyla Nordby, found her several hours later lying face-down in the snow-covered back yard, wearing only her diaper and a T-shirt. Paramedics pronounced the child clinically dead but she was later revived in hospital - one of only four or five other children in the world to survive such freezing. This will bring up a long list of books by Joe that are for sell. The collection will contain one long new piece, a novella in fact, plus a novella that's only seen print once, Mad Dog Summer, the novella version of THE BIG BLOW, an article, plus a couple other stories, one which has never been collected. Comes out soon, but I'm not sure exactly when. Other news, BUMPER CROP, a collection of short stories is coming out soon from GOLDEN GRYPHON. As is the trade paper of the collectiong HIGH COTTON. Joe has a lot of 1st edition hardcovers for sell at great prices, plus he'll autograph and inscribe them to you. I picked up a lot of my collection directly from him and quite often his asking price was half of what the book was actually going for on other websites. Once I started I read it in 2 days and loved it- I had finally found a new author I dug. Since that time I've been reading your stuff non-stop and enjoying it more and more (got through The Bottoms, Freezer Burn, Captains, Mucho Mojo, Bad Chili, Rumble Tumble). I just ordered Savage Season & Two Bear Mambo from eBay, and I can't wait 'til they get here. I am looking forward to the return of Hap & Leonard, what great characters. Any chance they might get picked up for the silver screen? He also has a book out called Graven Images(Overlook Press) that was supposed to be the first part of a trilogy, but I heard he had dropped the other two.
