Comments: jonathan, hope you do enjoy the book. It is one of my favorites of my own. And if you need copies of my books, you can go to THE HAP AND LEONARDS SITE, or my site at www.joerlansdale.com, and search through HOT STUFf for reference to book sales. My daughter also sells books, and I can see if she can give her web address to this board.

Comments: Joe, Jason, and Wayne -- Thanks for all the tips and recommendations! I just returned from the library and picked up A FINE DARK LINE. I know I'll love it because I love going to drive-in movies. I dont know why, but the description of the book reminds me of Stephen King's IT. It may be because it's set in the 50's and deals with kids. Of course I haven't read any of it yet so that could change as I read more.

Comments: Guys,
When you have some extra money and want to start building your collection of Joe's books with autograph 1st editions at very reasonable prices, visit Joe's website. That's where I purchased more than half of my books, and Joe doesn't charge you for shipping or handling. In fact, he'll even throw in a Dr. Pepper and a bag of vanilla cookies with the order.

I was able to grab paperback copies of Savage Season (The 1st Hap/Leonard), Cold In July, Two Bear Mambo (hardback),Mucho Mojo, and the Drive -In (Double feature Omni-Bus). Also check your local library- I found Fine Dark Line, The Bottoms, Freezer Burn, Bad Chili, Captains Outrageous & Rumble Tumble at mine!!!

Happy Hunting!

Comments: jonathan, glad you liked FREEZER BURN, it's probably the novel of mine that got the most mixed reaction, but I'm pretty fond of it. Drive-in is hard to find these days. Good luck finding Hap and Leonard, that shouldn't be too hard, though MYSTERIOUS no longer prints SAVAGE SEASON, which is the first one, so it is out of print. But they need not be read in order. I recommend you order MUCHO MOJO from the company if you are really interested. I also sell all these books, but am not shilling here. You can find out about the sales through the Hap and Leonard website. Joe

Comments: Hey John, it isn't a Hap and Leonard but you have to read "The Drive-In". It is my favorite anyway. I read when I was 15 or 16 and couldn't eat popcorn for years.

Comments: I'm uncertain how many books have been set in the bottoms, but at least one of the Hap and Leonard books was set there, SAVAGE SEASON, and there is some of it in TWO BEAR MAMBO, and I know some short stories I've written.

Comments: Hey Joe,

Just finished A Fine Dark Line in a couple sittings. It was great. You really capture the feeling of the settings in your work. I know A Fine Dark Line barely mentions the bottoms, but it made me wonder how many stories you've set there. I'd like to track all of them down. Keep up the good work,

Glen Krisch

Comments: It's great to hear of readers in Iceland. That's wonderful. Maybe I'll make it over there someday. Also, on the Winter Brothers, no need for me to say anything. They've gotten more publicity out of this than they deserve. There is plenty of material on the judgment on the internet.

Comments: Wayne, a looong story. The Winter Bros. have been going at it for years, losing one case then losing another. You want to read the whole story, check out the website of Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. They have the whole story there. I don't know if Joe wants to talk about it or not but I'll leave it to his own self.

CA SUPREME COURT SIDES WITH DC
by Beau Yarbrough, Staff Writer
Posted: June 2, 2003

The California Supreme Court has ruled that a parody of blues musicians Johnny and Edgar Winters in the DC/Vertigo miniseries "Riders of the Worm" did not violate their rights.

The decision Monday is the latest shot fired in a seven year lawsuit that followed the 1995 miniseries publication, in which the brothers alleged that their half-worm, half-human likenesses as villains in the miniseries subjected them to contempt and ridicule.

The court didn't disagree that the comic's Autumn Brothers resembled the Winter Brothers -- going so far as to attach a replica of one of the book's covers to their decision -- but said the images were so fantastic and altered that they fell under the protection of the First Amendment's right to freedom of expression.

"To the extent the drawings of the Autumn brothers resemble plaintiffs at all, they are distorted for purposes of lampoon, parody, or caricature," the decision reads in part.

An attorney for the Winters brothers indicated that they intended to further pursue litigation based on DC using the Winters brothers' names to sell the comics.

Comments: Mr. Lansdale is one of the greatest writers of our time and is getting very well recognised even in small and remote countrys like Iceland (pop. ca. 290.000). He surely is on his way to the Nobel Prize (if those old Swedes read anything interesting at all!); Works like "The Bottoms" reminds the reader of masterpieces like "Tom Sawyer". I hope he is going to keep on writing for a long time because artists like him make the world a lot more exiting and thrilling place to be.
