Comments: Doing the layout for a new thriller. The way I work is to loosely (VERY) block a three-act structure with two plot points and the mid-point, then use index cards to jot down notes on how the story might go. I've also down brief bios of the major characters. Once I have the main plot threads in my mind (although they are always subject to change if I stumble across a better idea as the novel unfolds) I'll begin to write. Almost there, just not quite. Weirdly enough, if I wait TOO long sometimes I never write the novel, it's as if I already know the storry so well there is no spark left, no impetus to tell it. Wish me luck! I'm hoping to dig into it for real by next weekend. Happy Monday!

A very successful lawyer parked his brand-new Lexus in front of his office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he got out, a truck passed too close and completely tore the door off of the driver's side. The counselor immediately grabbed his cell phone, dialed 911, and within minutes a policeman pulled up.
Before the officer had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically. His Lexus, which he had just picked up the day before, was now completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter what the body shop did to it.

When the lawyer finally wound down from his ranting and raving, the officer shook his head in disgust and disbelief.

"I can't believe how materialistic you lawyers are," he said. "You are so focused on your possessions that you don't notice anything else."

"How can you say such a thing?" asked the lawyer.

The cop replied, "Don't you know that your left arm is missing from the elbow down? It must have been torn off when the truck hit you."

"Ahhh!" screamed the lawyer. "Where's my Rolex!"

Comments: Hey, Chris! Guys, Trainwreck is in the house. We're rocking now. Welcome aboard. There are generally only a few of us here, but we have a good time. Has anyone else read "The Road?" Pretty amazing prose, although excruciating subject matter. Heartbreaking book. Or how about Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian?" One of the finest horror novels of the 20th Century. A truly terrifying western.

Comments: The ending troubled me in the novel, but as I thought about I realized Llewellen Moss died as he would have died in real life, unknown and unremarkable, despite all his efforts. He died "off screen" both the novel and movie as a way of saying that despite is struggles he was anonymous and still subject to the cruelty of the universe, as are we all. I'm too sleepy to have said it all that well, but I suspect you'll get the point. Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" is a bgrilliant and depressing novel with a strange ending as well, but one that eventually felt totally honest, despite having thrown me at first. Have a great weekend everybody.
