San Roque was born in the year 1295 in Montpelier, France. He was the only child of wealthy parents. His mother taught him Christian piety and doctrine. Sadly, at the age of 20, both of his parents died. Although he inherited a large fortune, the selfless San Roque gave everything to the poor. He then left for Rome, Italy with very few possessions. Along his journey, he passed through Tuscany Italy, where there was a terrible plague. Forced to stop until the plague was over, San Roque spent the time nursing and curing the sick. Then he continued his trip to Rome and then stayed there for three years. He visited churches and even prayed at the tombs of the Apostle Peter and Paul. He also visited the sick in hospitals. Upon learning that an epidemic broke out in Piacenza, Italy, San Roque went there to care for the sick and the poor. Then he himseld became sick. Fearing that he might spread the disease, the same people he helped did not allow San Roque to enter the hospital. He then fled to the wilderness where he lived in a hut. San Roque drank water from a spring and ate bread brought by a dog everyday. The dog also licked the wounds of San Roque. The owner of the dog, a rich man, wondered where his pet ran off the bread everyday. One day, he followed the dog and was extremely moved at the sight of San Roque. The rich man took San Roque to his home and cared for him. By God’s healing grace, San Roque was cured of his illness. San Roque then went back home to France. He looked very different now and even his friends and relatives did not recognize him. A war raging at that time and he was accused of being a spy. The judge, a close relative who also did not recognize him, sentenced San Roque to prison without hearing his explanation. In prison, San Roque requested for a confession. The priest noticed a halo around San Roque. He immediately petitioned for the released of San Roque. However, on August 16, 1327, after five years in prison, San Roque died. He was only 32 years old. A wooden plank with these words were found beside him, “Los que fue ron herudos de postilencia e implorasen e favor de Roque alcansa ran salud.” “Victims of the pestilence who will call on My servant Roque will be saved, for his sake.”The faithful dog continued to bring bread everyday to San Roque’s grave.
