News: OSBORNE'S THIRD TITLE OF THE YEAR

COLIN OSBORNE won his third tournament of 2009 with a 6-4 defeat of Michael van Gerwen in the final of Sunday's Players Championship at the Magnum Centre in Irvine.

Osborne added to his wins in a Players Championship in Barnsley and last month's Championship League Darts with the £6,000 title in Scotland.

The Derby ace produced a consistent display throughout the tournament, overcoming youngsters Joe Cullen and Kevin McDine 6-1 and whitewashing Louis Blundell to reach the quarter-finals.

There, a ten-dart leg sealed a 6-2 win over Brendan Dolan, and he overcame Mark Walsh 6-4 in the semis, before repeating the scoreline against van Gerwen in the final.

Osborne took what proved to be a crucial break of throw in the final's opening leg, on double 12, before hitting scores of 140 and 180 in doubling his advantage.

He also opened the third with a 171 score and should have moved 3-0 up, but four missed doubles allowed van Gerwen to take out 118 to get off the mark.

The two traded 180s in the fourth, which Osborne took, while a 116 checkout saw van Gerwen win the next to pull back to 3-2.

Leg six, through, summed up van Gerwen's occasional inconsistency in scoring, as he hit 43, 180, 26 and 174, only for Osborne to take out double 16 for a 4-2 lead.

The Dutchman then hit two 180s to open leg seven, missing out on a possible nine-darter but landing double 16 for the leg - only to then be punished for one miss at double top to level, as Osborne took out double one to move 5-3 up.

Tops did give van Gerwen a fourth leg, but Osborne kicked off the next with a 180, and also added a 140 to punish slow scoring from the youngster, before landing double top for a 13-darter and the victory.

"I'm very pleased and it's nice to win again," said Osborne. "I was pretty solid in the final and hit some important doubles at the right time.

"I thought I played well in Saturday's event but didn't take my chances, and today I hit my doubles and that proved crucial.

"It's good to be playing well and with the Grand Slam of Darts coming up next week I'll hopefully take this form into that tournament."

Van Gerwen's display saw him reach a second Players Championship final of the year, and featured a high-quality 6-3 win over in-form Steve Beaton in the semi-finals.

He also defeated Anastasia Dobromyslova, Ray Farrell, Andy Hamilton, Adrian Gray and Steve Grubb on the day in claiming the £3,000 runners-up cheque.

Beaton followed up his runs to the final of the European Championship and Saturday's Players Championship with a semi-final appearance, taking his prize money since the start of September to over £40,000.

Walsh's run to the last four means he finishes third in the 2009 Players Championship Order of Merit, with Sunday's event being the final Players Championship of the year.

Brendan Dolan's quarter-final appearance and a last 16 finish for Steve Hine secured their places in the top 32 of the Players Championship Order of Merit, and with it spots in January's Players Championship Finals event at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet.

The Players Championship Order of Merit will also provide 16 qualifiers for the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship, which begins on December 18 at Alexandra Palace.

They will be confirmed following the German Darts Championship on November 28 and 29 in Halle, with £100,000 up for grabs in that tournament.

News: NEWTON WINS IN SCOTLAND

PDC Report:

WES NEWTON claimed his first ranking title with a narrow victory over Steve Beaton in Saturday's Scottish Players Championship.

Newton has reached three PDC Pro Tour finals since the summer without victory, but ended that run in a final-leg thriller with Beaton at the Magnum Centre in Irvine.

In-form Beaton had defeated the Fleetwood ace a fortnight ago to claim his first win for eight years, but missed one dart for another victory in the deciding leg of this clash.

Beaton took the final's opener and landed a 180 in the second, but missed doubles allowed Newton to level, and the pair also traded the next two before an 11-darter put the Warwickshire-based star 3-2 up.

Newton landed two 140s and a 70 finish to level, and then defied another 180 from Beaton to land double 12 for a break of throw for a 4-3 lead after his opponent missed double 16 for the leg.

Newton then hit four ton-plus scores and double eight to move 5-3 up - before Beaton landed back-to-back 14-dart finishes to send the final into a decider.

Beaton landed two 140s, but a missed double 16 allowed Newton - who had hit scores of 139 and 137 in leaving 66 - back to snatch the win on double 18.

"I'm so relieved to have finally won a Players Championship," said Newton. "There was so much pressure on me in the final and I was trying not to think about it and just to play darts how I had throughout the day.

"I played awesome all day long - it's probably the best I've played consistently round on round - so I'm over the moon.

"I was 5-3 up and Steve got it back to five-all and had the darts in the last leg, and I thought I'd blown it!

"I knew I had to produce just one big leg and treated it like it was just a normal leg down at my local pub, and luckily enough I won it."

The win was a fine way for Newton to bounce back from the disappointment of a first round loss in Friday's PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts ITV Wildcard Qualifier, an event he won last year in Irvine.

A whitewash of Mick McGowan saw him start the day perfectly, and he narrowly missed double 12 for a nine-darter in defeating Nick Fullwell 6-1 in the second round, admitting: "I thought it was in and even celebrated, but it was right on the wire!"

Newton also dropped just one leg in a win over Roland Scholten before defeating Northern Irish pair Brendan Dolan and John MaGowan to reach the semi-finals, where he saw off Andy Smith 6-3.

Beaton sneaked past Peter Wright 6-5 in an exciting semi-final, with colourful star Wright missing three darts for victory in the decider before the European Championship runner-up took out 128 on the bull for victory.

Resurgent Beaton included Dutch pair Vincent van der Voort and Jelle Klaasen as well as former Lakeside Champion Mark Webster amongst his victims in reaching his third PDC Pro Tour final in as many months.

Wright's run to the semis matched his previous best run on the PDC Pro Tour, in the Las Vegas Players Championship this summer, and included a 6-2 win over practice partner Mervyn King in the last 16.

Steve Brown and John MaGowan reached the quarter-finals for just the second time this year, while Gary Anderson also reached the last eight before losing 6-2 to Smith.

News: WADE WINS SUNDAY'S PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP IN HOLLAND

JAMES WADE came from 2-0 down to defeat Brendan Dolan 6-2 and win Sunday's Players Championship in Nuland.

Dolan hit a 180 and double four to win the opening leg, and doubled his lead with Wade waiting on 40 in the second.

But a missed double top allowed Wade to reply in the third, and double top levelled.

Wade took out 106 to hit the front, and punished three misses to move 4-2 up.

A pair of double top finishes from Wade then saw him take the next two and complete the win, his second Players Championship victory of 2009 and his third on the PDC Pro Tour this year.

The world number three defeated Hampshire rival Colin Monk 6-3 in the semi-finals, and also overcame Peter Wright, Steve Beaton, Jelle Klaasen, Dennis Smith and Ken Dobson with some battling displays on the day.

Dolan's run to the final was his best of the year and should earn him a place in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship.

He began the day with a 6-3 win over Adrian Lewis, and also defeated Andy Hamilton and Gary Anderson in a deciding leg before whitewashing Mervyn King in a fine semi-final display.

Colin Monk enjoyed a run to the semi-finals which boosts his World Championship hopes.

Hamilton came from 5-2 down to defeat Andree Welge in the third round, denying the German a place in the European Championship.

Roland Scholten instead qualifies in the eighth place from the European Championship Order of Merit

News: BEATON WINS IN HOLLAND

PDC Report follows:

STEVE BEATON claimed his first tournament win since 2001 with a 6-1 defeat of Wes Newton in Saturday's Players Championship in Nuland.

The former Embassy Champion's last title came at the JR & Vauxhall Open in Great Yarmouth in 2001, but he continued his renaissance with a fine showing in Holland.

Having reached a Players Championship final in Austria last month, losing to Jamie Caven, he went one better this time around to claim the £6,000 Players Championship title.

Beaton began Saturday's event with a 6-4 win over Wayne Mardle, hitting a 170 finish to claim victory, and then whitewashed Dennis Smith before seeing off Denis Ovens and Steve Hine.

He was a 6-4 victor against Kevin Painter in the quarter-finals, and produced an impressive display to see off Vincent van der Voort 6-1 in the semis.

The 45-year-old then came from a leg down to defeat Wes Newton in the decider.

Newton took advantage of four missed doubles to win the opening leg, but could do little as the next two went to Beaton on double 16.

Misses from Newton were punished as Beaton took a 3-1 lead, before he landed 180s in taking the next two legs, and then sealed victory on double 16.

"It's brilliant," said Beaton. "It's been a long time coming for me but I've been desperate to win an event and come close a few times recently.

"I know I can still do it and it's about putting it together on the day and performing, and I did that today.

"We always say there are no easy games but to draw Wayne Mardle in the first round, when he's scrapping to stay in the top 16, was massive and that was a big win.

"I had tough games throughout the day against top players and that's another bonus."

In-form Newton reached his third PDC Pro Tour final inside three months with his run, which included a 6-4 win over Adrian Lewis in the semi-finals.

He also overcame York's Chris Thompson 6-5 in the last eight, and defeated Toon Greebe, Jyhan Artut, Roland Scholten and Colin Monk in the event.

Gary Anderson inflicted a 6-2 win on world number two Raymond van Barneveld in his run to the quarter-finals, while world number three James Wade was defeated in a deciding leg by Gibraltar's Dylan Duo.

News: SHOCK AS COLIN OSBORNE WINS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE DARTS TITLE

COLIN OSBORNE claimed his first major title with a 6-4 victory over Phil Taylor to win the 2009 Championship League Darts.
Osborne avenged his loss to Taylor in the final of June's UK Open with an accomplished performance to see off the world number one and claim the £10,000 first prize at Crondon Park GC in Essex.
Osborne finished second to unbeaten Taylor in the Winners Group table after the eight-played league phase, before seeing off Mervyn King 6-1 in the semi-finals and Taylor in the decider.
He made an ideal start to the final with a 129 finish, and also missed two darts at double eight for the second leg before Taylor landed double four to level.
A brace of double top finishes put him 3-1 up before Taylor posted an 11-darter to pull back the fifth.
Double top from Osborne gave him a 4-2 cushion, only for reigning champion Taylor to crank up the pressure with a pair of 11-dart finishes.
Taylor left himself 74 to break throw in the ninth leg, but Osborne produced a superb 142 checkout on double 11 to lead 5-4.
And a missed bullseye from Taylor in the next gave the Derby-based star his chance, taking out 68 on double four for the title.
"It's a great feeling," admitted Osborne, who totalled £24,800 prize money for the tournament after competing in four league groups and the Winners Group.
"It's hard enough to beat Phil anyway but always even harder in the final, so that's the icing on the cake for me.
"I thought I played well all day and kept it going in the final. I took out the 129 in the first leg and had chances to lead 2-0, and when I went 3-1 up I knew I could have been even further ahead.
"But it's not over until it's over and Phil came back at me well, but I managed to get over the finishing line."
Osborne has had a disappointing time since the UK Open, losing in the first round of the last three televised tournaments, but hopes to continue this form into the forthcoming European Championship and Grand Slam of Darts.
"I put myself under a lot of pressure after the UK Open but hopefully now I can kick on for the rest of the year," he added.
"I've proven to myself that if I play as well as I can do, I can beat anybody, and now I have to keep doing that."
Osborne suffered just two defeats in the league phase, to King and Taylor, but avenged those in claiming his victory.
Taylor won all seven of his league matches, dropping just 11 legs in the process and whitewashing Mervyn King.
“I’m obviously disappointed to lose in the final, but Colin was the better man and deserved the win,” said Taylor. “He played really well and took some great finishes out.
“I’ve had a good run in this and hopefully it will stand me in good stead for the European Championship next weekend.”
King - the 2008 Championship League Darts runner-up - finished third in the table, but failed to regain his best form in the semis and ended on £13,000 for the tournament.
James Wade bounced back from losing his first three games to edge out Adrian Lewis for fourth place in the table on leg difference.
Wade, who had defeated Taylor to win Group One last month, lost to the world number one 6-2 in the semis, but still takes home £9,550 prize money.
Lewis ends the 2009 Championship League Darts as the second highest money-earner, claiming £19,500 after playing in all nine days of the tournament, finally winning Group Eight on Wednesday to book a Winners Group spot.
Mark Walsh won just two games on the day, while Jelle Klaasen and Wayne Mardle picked up one win apiece.
Championship League Darts was streamed solely on the internet via a series of ten bookmakers’ websites around the world. Prize money of £100 per leg was on offer in the Winners Group league phase and £200 per leg in the play-offs, with additional prize money of £10,000 to the champion, £5,000 to the runner-up and £2,500 each to the losing semi-finalists.
In total, £175,400 has been paid out across the nine days of the tournament, which featured 29 players in eight groups, with each group’s champion progressing to Thursday’s Winners Group.

News: LEWIS QUALIFIES FOR CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE DARTS FINAL - AT LAST!

PDC Report:

ADRIAN LEWIS ended two years of disappointment in Championship League Darts by winning Group Eight of the tournament on Wednesday.
Lewis competed in five groups last year without winning one, and had missed out on a place in the final in each of the seven previous groups this time around.
However, he backed up his first placed finish in the Group Eight table by coming through the play-offs to take the last remaining spot in Thursday's Winners Group.
Lewis lost to Terry Jenkins and Kirk Shepherd in the league phase, winning his other five matches, before hitting a 170 checkout in overcoming Shepherd 6-1 in the semi-finals.
He then capitalised on missed doubles from van Gerwen to assume a 4-2 lead in the decider.
Double 16 gave van Gerwen a third leg, but a brilliant ten-darter from Lewis put him one leg away from the win at 5-3.
He was waiting on 32 when van Gerwen took the ninth on double ten, but punished two misses from his opponent to finally seal the 6-4 win on double top.
"I'm so relieved it's untrue," said Lewis, who has now won £16,700 in this year's event and £31,950 including last year's prize money.
"After losing in three finals last year I thought it was going to happen again today and Michael kept coming back at me.
"But I managed to get it back together in the end and hopefully I can do the same in the Winners Group now tomorrow."
Van Gerwen picked up £2,900 in a successful debut in the tournament, shown only on the internet via a series of ten bookmakers' websites worldwide.
The 20-year-old Dutchman finished second in the league table and then defeated Barrie Bates 6-4 in the semis.
Bates enjoyed a fruitful day in the tournament, picking up £2,050 in his run to the play-offs, while Shepherd made a brilliant recovery to sneak into the last four.
The 2008 World Championship finalist lost his opening three matches, but won his final four games to edge out Tony Eccles on leg difference.
That meant Eccles narrowly missed out on the semi-finals for a second successive day, although he picked up £3,400 overall.
A 6-2 defeat for Wayne Jones in his final league game meant he also missed out on the play-offs on leg difference, but he ends the event on £6,100 from three days of competition.
Terry Jenkins suffered a collapse in his fifth day in the tournament, losing his last three matches - including a brace of whitewashes in 16 successive losing legs - to end the day second bottom, above Holland's Roland Scholten.
Thursday sees the eight group winners return to Crondon Park GC in Essex, headed by reigning champion Phil Taylor and world number two James Wade.
Mervyn King, Mark Walsh, Wayne Mardle, Colin Osborne, Jelle Klaasen and Lewis will join them for the big-money Winners Group, with prize money of £100 per leg on offer in the league phase and £200 per leg in the play-offs.
The overall winner will pick up an additional £10,000, with the runner-up taking home £5,000 and the semi-finalists £2,500 each.
The day will be doubly crucial for Walsh and Klaasen, who could win a place in next month's PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts by reaching the final.

News: KLAASEN WINS PENULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE DARTS GROUP

PDC Report follows:

JELLE KLAASEN defeated Kirk Shepherd 6-1 to win Group Seven of Championship League Darts.

In arguably the tournament's most dramatic day yet, Klaasen came from fourth in the league table following the eight-man group stage to claim victory with play-off wins over Adrian Lewis and Shepherd.

Klaasen was one of five players to finish the group phase on eight league points, with Lewis top, Shepherd second and Wayne Jones finishing third - while Tony Eccles missed out on a semi-final place on a count-back of Legs Won Against Throw to the Dutch ace.

Klaasen then overcame Lewis 6-5 in the semis, holding off a fightback as the Stoke star came from 3-1 and 5-2 down to send their game into a decider.

He then overcame some nervous early doubling in the final to power past Shepherd, who shared the opening two legs but was punished for his own misses as Klaasen took a 3-1 lead.

Shepherd, the 2008 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship runner-up, never recovered as Klaasen won the next three legs to claim his spot in Thursday's big-money winners group - where a place in the PartyPoker.com Grand Slam of Darts next month is also on offer for the finalists.

"I'm very happy to have qualified," said Klaasen. "It was very close today but I'm pleased with how I played.

"I think I learned a lot from playing in Group Six last month and that showed today, and I can look forward to the Winners Group on Thursday.

"There's a lot of prize money on offer and I can also win a place in the Grand Slam of Darts, so it's a big day for me."

Shepherd earned £2,550 for his day's work on his debut in this year's event - his best pay-day since the 2009 World Championship - and returns on Wednesday to compete in Group Eight.

Lewis will also be back in action in Group Eight, giving him the distinction of having competed on all eight days of this year's tournament without yet having won a group, with his prize money now totalling £13,550.

Wolverhampton's Jones was a narrow 6-5 loser to Shepherd in the semi-final, allowing the youngster to come from 5-2 down to edge victory.

Jones had won a semi-final spot in a dramatic final round of matches - leaping from sixth to third with a 6-5 win over Shepherd.

Andy Smith was knocked out of the event on leg difference, with Terry Jenkins narrowly avoiding elimination, while wins in his final two games were not enough to save Co Stompe from being knocked out.

Dutch duo Roland Scholten and Michael van Gerwen come in for Group Eight, alongside Wales' Barrie Bates.

The Group Eight winner will join James Wade, Phil Taylor, Mervyn King, Mark Walsh, Wayne Mardle, Colin Osborne and Klaasen in Thursday's Winners Group.

News: TAYLOR AND BARNEY TO CONTEST WORLD GRAND PRIX FINAL

Report by Superstars of Darts

It’s going to be Taylor and Barneveld yet again as both progressed to the final last night in Dublin.

Raymond van Barneveld shook off an early challenge from Andy Hamilton and showed flashes of brilliance over Hamilton’s dogged consistency in a 5 sets to 2 victory.

Terry Jenkins gave his all against Phil Taylor as he too lost by 5 sets to 2, with ‘The Power’ looking to be in impressive form as he heads towards today’s final.

Barneveld was fairly downbeat about his chances in the final – whether it be against Jenkins or Taylor, but it’s all down to darts on the night and darts fans across the globe will be eagerly anticipating another final between the two giants of the game.
