Would you ask Agatha Christie if she got the inspiration for her mysteries by murdering people? Would you ask Robin Cook if he received the inspiration for his medical thrillers by stealing people's living organs? If a writer uses supernatural themes in his or her work, that doesn't *necessarily* mean that he or she is in cahoots with the Devil. Actually, I think the supernatural in most contemporary works these days is used mostly as a metaphor. For example, a deal with the Devil might symbolize greed. But then, that's just my opinion. For all I know, every one else is penning deals with the Devil right and left! :-)

Comments: Hi Chris,

Just a very curious question...ok, all questions are suppose to be curious. Anyway, how and where do u usually get your source of inspiration? Do u believe in the devil? if you do, would you sell your soul for a skill like writing? A Faustian deal?

Comments: Hi, Christopher Fowler here with a few answer to recent enquiries - I'm trying to get back to as many readers as possible, but as I'm on several boards it gets hard to keep pace when you're travelling...
First, 'Flare Guns' has undergone a title-change to 'The Devil In Me'. If you want to know when it will be pubblished, email Peter Ayrton @ Serpent's Tail, then let me know!
I'm writing two new books that will hopefully separate the two sides of my writing in the same way that Iain Banks manages his SF strand. As 'Christopher Robert' I'm working on the more serious, literate novel 'Home', and as 'Christopher Fowler', I'm writing 'The Infernal Bryant & May', which will be gory and darkly humorous, in the style of 'Darkest Day'. I might even get around to sorting out the Leicester Square Vampire business. I'm also doing the final script-polish on 'Disturbia' for Jake Scott, as well as adapting a screenplay for TV this Christmas. Email Fraser Lee and tell him you want to see his excellent short film 'On Edge'!

I'm sorry to reach you in such a roundabout way, but I'm co-editing a reprint horror anthology, and I'd love to include one of your short stories. If you're interested, please e-mail me for more information. This is a professional project.

Thank you,

Comments: Chris, Hi there. Any news on the publication date for 'Flare Guns' ? in 2000 ? or later in 2001 as per what seems to be your yearly publication schedule ? also, any news on more novel length fiction - did warner go for the idea of 'The Casebook Of Bryant and May' ?, or is there something else in the works - more Menz Insana ??? please.... Kind regards and thanks.

Comments: Hi all..

Well.. Apart from Mr Folwer, Cliver Barker is on my must buy list.. And his novels haven't been horror for quite some time. So, basically IMHO, as long as the writer is good enough, and the story is interesting, I'm quite happy to read most genre's they write. Saying that, I found some of Graham Mastertons non-horror work dull in the extreme..

So after neatly contradicting myself, I'll slope off.

Gareth

Comments: Christopher, I can't believe DC comics think any comic story could be too "far out" I mean that is part of the reason I hunted Menz Insana out, I hoped it would be something different, original and engaging and it surpassed my expectations. I really hope you get the go ahead to produce another comic with John Bolton as Menz Insana was in all senses a work of art, in illustration as well as creative imagination of action. Cheers x x x

Comments: Hi there,
I wrote and directed the film ON EDGE based on Christopher's short story about a homicidal dental artist. Doug Bradley plays Dr Matthews, and Charley Boorman plays the patient, Thurlow.
I'm delighted to announce that ON EDGE will be screened on USA TV along with interviews with Clive Barker, Doug Bradley and myself. The screening takes place on July 5th on SciFi Channel's Exposure show.
More info about ON EDGE at: www.robber-baron.co.uk
And the Exposure show (updated weekly) at: www.exposure.scifi.com
Once again a massive thankyou to Chris for allowing me to film his brilliant story.

Comments: Hi everyone! I saw the TV adaptation of "The Master Builder" years back when it was first aired and would very much like to read the original short story. I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere. Which anthologies contain this story? (I'd like to start searching eBay, good used bookstores, et cetera.) I've heard that "The Master Builder" is one of Chris Fowler's best works and I'm very excited to read it. Thanks in advance for your help! :o)

Comments: Hi, Christopher Fowler here with a few FAQs:
Will Bryant & May return? I've had a plot outline for The Bryant & May Casebook, a kind of Sherlock Holmes compendium, finished for some time now and hope to get around to it soon. Of course, they may be dead by now, but let's resurrect 'em!
Will I do another 'Menz Insana'?' John Bolton and I are anxious to work together again, but DC comics keep turning down my outlines because they are 'too way out'. I hope to convince them to do one, which is set in a department store as big as the world.
Why are you billed under 'Masters Of Terror'? I love good horror stories (if you've never found a perfect anthology, search out the ones edited by Kirby McCauley, particularly 'Frights' and 'Dark Forces' but when you want to move on and develop fresh ideas - even though they don't always work - you're stuck forever with the title you came in under.
Why aren't you published in the US? Because they are only prepared to publish me if I 're-edit' the material to be more appropriate to a US readership. Personally I think US readers are smart enough to figure out what I'm doing without having to be spoon-fed.
I've decided to write some more horror stories, but to mix some black comedies in with them. The collection is called 'The Devil In Me' and comes out in the new year from Serpent's Tail. Keep those thoughts coming...

A long time follower of your books when I lived in London, I'd love to be able to take your 'poll' on Calabash, but I cannot get a copy of it in the States. Will your books ever be published across the pond?
cheers,
Loretta

Comments: Christopher, I'm really interested in your comic book work. Is Menz Insana the only project you have engaged in? Have you done any other comic work in the past or planning on doing any in the future? I would love to get my hands on some if you have. If not I urge, no beg you to do more. Menz Insana created a thirst that no other comic art or story have before, yet I am ignorant as to whether there is more to come or it was simply a one one. I crave more yet I fear there is none, please tell me.
Cheers x x x
